Should I buy - 2014 Grand Cherokee

Hi! I may not be in the correct place but I'm in need of advice. I'm about to buy a used Grand Cherokee Summit but started finding a ton of bad reviews regarding reliability. I love everything about the jeep but don't want to drop a bunch of money and then deal with loads of repairs. Any advice would be great, thanks!

Re: Should I buy - 2014 Grand Cherokee

I cannot talk about the Summitt, but I am on my second Jeep, a 2014 Overland. My first is a 2004 JGC that we still have with well over 200k miles that has been great. I remember reading reviews prior to buying the 2004 that said they weren't reliable and tranny's sucked.

I am glad I ignored the reviews back in '04. The Jeep has been a rock and when I gave to son I had tranny garage do some quick once over and all he did was change fluid and said I was could to go for another 200k miles

Prior to buying my 2014 I didn't read one review. Currently 45k miles, paid $2,300'ish for lifetime warranty and I could not be happier.

Just get it

Re: Should I buy - 2014 Grand Cherokee

Buying any vehicle new or used can be a crapshoot. On the 14's, the later builds probably have fewer issues but if your going by what you read here that may not be obvious.

I have an early build 14. While it hasn't been trouble free, the few problems I've had have been fixed by my dealer. I'd worry more about the competency of the service department to diagnose and fix problems at the dealer you're buying the vehicle from than the actual problems you could encounter. Some service departments are good, others not so good. And like I said above, that could apply to any vehicle you buy.

Re: Should I buy - 2014 Grand Cherokee

Based on my reading on this site early built 2014's might be the ones to avoid if you want to be safe. Any 2014 with a mfr date in 2013 could be a good candidate to avoid. Also, V6 models have been known to have figgity transmissions (all of them regardless of build date).
I'm sure anything you get will be good, but if you want the model with least amount of reported issues on this site my vote would be late built 2014 or later V8. I currently have 3300 miles on my April 2014 built V8 Summit and it's amazing! No regrets.

Re: Should I buy - 2014 Grand Cherokee

I have a 2014 V6 Limited with a build date of July, 2013. I've now had it for 2 years and 35,000 miles and I'm still happy with it.

I haven't had any problems with mine other than some minor shifting annoyances, which went away after having the dealer apply the transmission firmware updates.

So, there is some truth to the "figgity transmissions" comment, but take these comments with a grain of salt as most are based on experiences prior to the latest transmission firmware updates.

But yes, avoid build dates prior to June 2013. There were a lot of issues from annoying things, like carpet fitment, to nasty things, like electrical issues caused by loose ground wires.

Re: Should I buy - 2014 Grand Cherokee

I have a 2014 V6 Overland, really no issues.

I like it so much I just bought the Lifetime Service Contract.

The manufacture date is pretty important IMHO. Go for a late build date. Other than that, try to get the Lifetime Service Contract thrown in or least an extended mileage warranty (maybe 70K).

My question would be "why did the previous owner turn it in?" Probably had some early issues and was getting frustrated, but those should be taken care of now. Maybe a CarFax would help?

Re: Should I buy - 2014 Grand Cherokee

I'm not sure why it was traded in but on the Carfax it shows July 2013 as the date it was released to be sold. Also, there was a transmission update noted on the Carfax as well. I think I may cancel my hold on this one and wait it out. I was trying to buy used but they seem to be hard to come by. Thanks for all the insight, still can't wait to get my hands on one!

Re: Should I buy - 2014 Grand Cherokee

Tough call on any car. You're not buying a Toyota or Lexus, which are known to have the least problems. Chrysler could do better with their quality and reliability, no question.

For that reason, I'd always get an extended warranty and service plan with it.

We JUST bought our 2014 GC Limited with 39k miles. Ours is actually a November, 2012 build even though it was a 2014 model year. Has every option possible for the Limited, and it's a V6. I checked out its service history and it always got regularly serviced. We've now road tripped 1500 miles with it and it's been absolutely perfect. Of course, this is all anecdotal, statistics being what they are.

But, to be safe, we purchased a warranty for an additional 4 years/50k miles for $1900 which will cover anything on the vehicle, including all electronics, etc for the peace of mind. So I would say know what you're getting, do your research on THAT particular car (including calling previous dealers where it was serviced), and go from there. We wanted a Jeep so we went with it, and if problems come, that's what the extend warranty is for.

If you do buy, make sure you get a full comprehensive warranty also you need to have a service department with a good track record when it comes to handling issues.

Should I buy - 2014 Grand Cherokee

I had my 2014 replaced by Chrysler a few months ago. Im not going to explain the laundry list of problems it had or how long it was out of service for before it was replaced

If i were you would avoid 2014's and look into 2015's.

Re: Should I buy - 2014 Grand Cherokee

For those of you with the V6, do any of you tow a boat with it? I have a 19' boat that weighs around 4400 fully loaded with double axle trailer so I've been meaning on the 5.7. The catch is, we tow up to the mountains in Northern California so I don't want to push it. Any thoughts?
