Re: Show us your rack configuration/accessories!

Nice setup guys. The reason I'm asking is I'm considering putting a dog kennel in the back that would bring the storage capacity in the back to zero.

My thought is to get a rack and store the spare and everything on the roof. That means I'd have to have some lockable storage boxes of some sort.

Good question, I guess the answer is no. I haven't noticed any thing at slow speeds and at higher speeds I am too busy worrying about whether my tires are going to rub my fenders so I haven't really thought about it. I am just about to leave for an hour or so drive on the freeway though, so I will try to see if I can feel it and report back.

Is the dog kennel permanent? Couldn't you just take it out if you ever got a flat? Don't get me wrong, I love having my spare up there because I like the looks of it, my spare is too big to fit inside and I love having the extra storage space for all my off road gear and my day pack with my 10 essentials. I would just hate to see you loose all that storage space if it wasn't necessary...

My guess is you'd noticed the loss in fuel economy before you'd notice the difference in balance.

So, I paid careful attention on big dips and still didn't feel the spare up there. And you are right, I definitely notice the loss in fuel economy. I would guess that the roof rack and everything I have up there cost me 3-4 MPG when freeway driving. My larger off road tires also cost me a couple MPG but all that is ok since I have the EcoDiesel. :-)

The kennel I have is large enough that it needs to be disassembled in order to be put in or removed.

I'm looking at some others that are more or less permanent.

BigCat,
I like the rack and the crosspiece above your windshield. I'd like to get the same for mine.
What brand/model are they?

Re: Show us your rack configuration/accessories!

Not that it helps the US guys too much, here's my set up. Uneek roof rack (doubles weight capacity) with traxrax mounts for recovery tracks. And a roof rack bag for the camping gear. I also have a rhino rack gas bottle strap so it can go on the roof.

Thanks, it's actually a Gobi Stealth Rack - all one piece (the crossbars are integrated into the rack) the factory roof rails are actually removed and this rack bolts into the factory holes. It has a removable panel over the sunroof and the rack supports 300 pounds while traveling and 600 pounds static. Gobi racks aren't cheap -$1,500 just for the basics but I'm very happy with it.
