Nominate Sleeping in your Grand Cherokee

We are planning a cross country trip this summer (2014) in our 2012 Grand Cherokee. We intend to get a car-topper for storage and plan to sleep only occasionally in the back of the vehicle. We are wondering is anyone out there has done something similar and found an air mattress or foam mattress that fits the back of the vehicle such that you can get a good nights sleep on a level plane. Anxious to hear what others have tried.

Coleman sells an SUV air mattress that fits fairly well (73in x 40in x 6.5in) for about $35.00

Re: Sleeping in your Grand Cherokee

I have been contemplating a little camping out of the back of a GC also. I think 4" or 5" of memory foam would do the trick.

BTW, I am thinking about getting a pair of these magnetic window screens: SUV, Truck, Van, Car, and RV Mesh Window Screens | The Skeeter Beater

I like the inflatable mattress idea in that it takes less room stored. The 12vdc inflators make it simple to setup.

I like the 4" memory foam for comfort as long as there is room to store it. I would guess it would roll up but would be relatively large. Another alternative is a thinner mat like those used under a sleeping bag.

Let us know what you try.

Amazon.com: Intex Prestige Downy Twin Airbed Kit: Sports & Outdoors

This worked really well for me (note: ONE person). You do have to move the seats forward a little bit to get the liftgate to close though. Your post says that "we" are going on a trip, which makes me think you're trying to get two people in the back and still have a good night's sleep. Good luck with that!!

Re: Sleeping in your Grand Cherokee

Yeah, the memory foam works best when you can leave it flat in back and pile some stuff on it if necessary. Rolling and stowing it = no fun.

Re: Sleeping in your Grand Cherokee

I have sleeping pad from therm-a-rest that I use for motorcycle camping. It rolls up very small and is pretty comfortable for being so thin. They arent cheap but I recommend them.

I used to have the larger inflatable kind for the bed of my truck and they werent anywhere near as comfortable as the therm-a-rest.

Re: Sleeping in your Grand Cherokee

Its no problem, I am 5'8'' and my partner and I fit in fine...
We use a 4 inch latex mattress..
For curtains..what works well is to get a series of the cheap reflective folding sunshields .. like
6pcs Folding Silvering Reflective CAR Window SUN Shade Visor Shield Cover R1BO | eBay

then cut them to the shape of the Jeep windows.. We have put mosquito netting in a cut-out on a couple for internal airflow.

Who needs a Winnebago?

Re: Sleeping in your Grand Cherokee

I've slept in the back of mine, with my gf and 75lbs dog. Granted I'm 5'7" and she's 5'4", but it wasn't THAT cramped back there.

We actually started the night off camping outside, but it was super windy and our tent kept basically collapsing, so we said F this and laid out all of the sleeping bags in the back with the seats folded down... perfect (as far as car camping goes).

Re: Sleeping in your Grand Cherokee

I have a pair of the sleeping pads from Therm-a-Rest as well and they are better than any air mattress that I have ever tried....

Re: Sleeping in your Grand Cherokee

The ThermaRest pads are the best by far, but they really push the boundary of "expensive".

The airbeds are very cheap and amazingly comfortable--as long as it's warm out. But if the temps are even slightly cool overnight--and I mean below 60 degrees--all that uninsulated air in the mattress feels like sleeping on a block of ice. So you end up filling up the car with extra blankets.

If I camp in my Jeep again (it's been years), I'm going to rig up some window screens, as previously mentioned. You'll want a LOT of ventilation or the car will steam up very quickly.

The car top sleepers look interesting, but they're going to destroy your highway gas mileage, as will any kind of rooftop cargo carrier.
