I put slush mats in my Jeep shortly after purchasing it this past February and have had no problems. Yesterday I hosed the mats off, let them dry and now they have a horrible smell! I scrubbed them with detergent, but the smell is still there. Any thoughts?
If the aroma is due to mold, spray them down with a bleach solution and let it soak or a couple of minutes before hosing it off. Other than that, febreze could help.
I have the Mopar slush mats and cargo mat, and haven't noticed any smell from them, at least not yet.
The funny thing is, they didn't smell before I hosed them off. The only thing I can think of is that I hadn't used the hose in quite some time and maybe the water in the hose caused the smell. It's almost like a cat-urine type smell.
Interesting, I just installed a set of the slush mats front and rear, as well as in the cargo area. No smell yet...doesn't make me want to wash them though!
Did you ever notice the smell when they got wet from your shoes?
Front and rear Mopar slush mats have been in for 2 weeks. This is their second winter. Mopar cargo mat is in 24/7/365. No smell from about 1 foot away. This is odd. Sorry, no suggestions.
On the off chance it really is cat urine - try this: Use equal parts white vinegar and water and scrub on the mats. The mats might smell a little "vinegary" but that will dissipate shortly. I have found that white vinegar is as good or better for destroying cat urine odor vs. any commercial product.
Mine have been in for over six weeks and although I haven't washed the mats, they have gotten wet. I have washed the cargo mat but have not had any odors from any of them. I'm still going for the"something got on your mats while they were out of the vehicle" theory. If not, I would show them to your dealer, when they are at their ripest.
