Smaller "JGC"-like in the future?

We can see a trend in the market for luxury compact SUV such as BMW X3 or Audi Q5. At first, these were vehicles I was looking for purchasing but, I was sold to JGC in the process. However, the JGC although it competes on many levels with these luxury small to mid-size SUVs, is much larger and feels that way when you drive it. I feel that Jeep is missing a spot by not offering a smaller size luxury SUV, something equivalent in terms of options with the GC but smaller and with better fuel economy. I think the Compass is a joke and the Liberty is too rough around the edges to qualify as a luxury vehicle. That without saying that none of the two have an as-punchy look and feel as the GC.

What do you guys think?
-J

The JCG has always been on the small size for that SUV market segment, and I do like smaller and maneuverable. I would suspect the next Liberty Limited could be more along your lines. I would never expect to see a V8 in that line, however.

I've read that the new Liberty will be more upscale than it has been, it can only go up from what it is now.

Very true. The current liberty is awful - I had one as a rental a few years back. Too bad, because I actually think its a decent looking vehicle on the exterior.

I dunno, my spouse loves her 09 Liberty and many over in the Liberty forum love theirs. The build quality is top notch but it seems to have more of economy/price vs high quality materials target market. It is hampered by the same V6 and transmission the WK1 were hampered with. Certainly good enough, however. The JGC uses the Liberty window switches and many other items, however... the optional automatic 4WD system works very well.

Re: Smaller "JGC"-like in the future?

Jeep isn't a luxury manufacturer. The GC has played in the near luxury segment due to the upper trim levels, but that doesn't make it a luxury vehicle. Sure, the Overland is close, but there's still a few areas where it doesn't round out the full experience.

I really don't see them making a smaller SUV with all the goodies. Most luxury makers don't even do that.

Re: Smaller "JGC"-like in the future?

The Jeep GC (according to a Google search) has a 5" shorter wheelbase than the X3 already. So in away it is already in that market.

My dad has a Merc ML and it seems huge compared to my GC although is much nicer to detail as it has less curvy bits than the GC! But I like my girls curvy...

I'd say the Jeep brand is blue-collar and I like it that way too, compared to BMWs etc...

I agree that it is not meant to be exactly a luxury brand, sorry for misuse of words. But having a Smaller vehicle with premium material and equipment (like an Overland as an example) would be awesome. I think there would be a customer base for that. Customers are willing to pay for small size combined with premium finish and equipment. Look at mercedes B series
Btw, my previous vehicle was Liberty 2004 limited fully equiped. Price was not an issue at the time but there was no better equiped Jeep in that size category. Still way far from a JGC in terms on options.

I think the idea of a smaller vehicle with premium materials is already being served by the luxury brands themselves. The Acura RDX, Mercedes GLK, BMW X3, Infiniti EX, and others all fill this niche. True, the prices of these vehicles are still in the $30-40K range, but I'm not sure that a Jeep branded one would be significantly cheaper. My previous vehicle, a 2008 Patriot Limited 4x4, was stickered at $25K. You add too much to that and you are priced right up at those premium brands. While the WK2 Overland looks like a great deal at about $10K less than a comparable Lexus, Mercedes, or Infiniti, that kind of price disparity would just not be maintained at a lower price point.

At most you'd be talking a $3-5K price difference, and quite honestly, at that little bit of a difference, give me the premium brand ten times out of ten. Heck, if I had to do it again, I might really have to think over that ten grand differential... sure, it's no small amount of money, but you get it back on the back end in terms of resale.
