Re: Snow coming

I had my 1st shot at driving in snow today with my Jeep.Took a turn on rt 36 here in Jersey in about 2 inches of snow.Fishtailed and before I could recover I did just short of a complete 360 wound up in front of Advanced auto parts with my front facing traffic and my rear bumper about 4 feet from hitting a pole.I have been home since as the roads are a friggin mess.

Yes, be careful out there. I took a short trip in the ZJ to fill up on gas (rt 35) and it was a white knuckle affair. There's a lot of ice on the NJ roads under the white stuff.

Re: Snow coming

Drove home from North Jersey to Philly in the snow. (not before it was too bad) As long as you drive within your limit, you'll be fine.

/although I did find an empty parking lot to do some donuts and a few figure eights

Here's a pic I took with my phone when driving from GA to VA. It was pretty much like this from NC to my driveway in Chesapeake.

I take it traffic was light, judging from the photo and also some deductive reasoning (since you felt comfortable snapping cell pics while driving in this). Glad you made it home safely.

Re: Snow coming

Drove from the WI/IL border to the NWU area Sunday ~1am where I-294 had 4"-6" of lake-effect snow completely covering all lanes of the interstate; a truly ugly mess. The WK2 on stock 20" Forteras gripped/tracked fine and I had no issues except for the idiots in cars passing dangerously close. The WK2 was disturbingly comfortable and secure given the control issues I saw in other vehicles on the road with me at that time.

I witnessed 3 wrecks happen far in front of me in the southbound lanes from people fishtailing while trying to drive 50+mph in that slop...idiots. Two were 4x4s in spin outs, a Toyota Highlander and a Chevrolet Tahoe in separate fender-bender incidents and no injuries, the third a Subaru XTi AWD hit the wall and needed a wrecker but thankfully no injuries. It's the idiots not the weather that makes for a big pucker factor.

Re: Snow coming

Drove with the "Snow" drive setting today for the first time.... all is well ! Super smooth, and the 20's responded better than I thought they would. Happy camper in Mass.

Re: Snow coming

Me too. My overland handeld beautifully with no hiccups. If you know how to drive in the snow and have a good vehicle under you like this one you'll do fine.

Re: Snow coming

Be safe out there right coasters. During Colorado winters, the preponderance of rigs that we see in ditches and greasy side up are typically 4x4 SUV's and trucks that just drive faster than needed due to overconfidence. The WK2 handles the white stuff beautifully, just not at race car speeds.

Cheers.

Very true. SUVs don't turn or stop any better than a 2wd vehicle in the bad stuff. If anything they are a lot worse due to the added heft but some people drive them like they are invincible in snow.

I drive like a grandpa in the bad stuff. I'd rather get somewhere 30 minutes late than never.

BTW, my town decided not to plow the roads so I am snowed in for the first time ever. 26" of snow, several foot drifts everywhere.

Also, my anecdotal observation is that we Right Coasters in the Mid-Atlantic region (collectively, with some exceptions obviously) have neither the snow removal expertise nor the driving temperament to navigate snow successfully. I won't belabor that since I've already vented my spleen on the subject.

Growing up in WV we learned how to drive in snow early on and we got enough snow that it was not a novelty event. Many of my native Washingtonian friends never had a chance to learn those lessons, but are too clueless to know what they don't know. Bad combination.

I guess I did belabor it, after all. . Thanks for the sage advice, moosehead.
