Snow. How deep?

I have a 2012 Laredo X with the V6. I really like the truck so far, except the crappy shift programming.

For those of you running stock tire sizes and no lift kits how deep of snow have you driven through without getting stuck? I realize that the type of snow will make a difference, such as dry and light snow vs. wet heavy snow. So a little of that type info might be usefull too.

Coming from a Ram 2500 4WD I'm wondering how the Jeep will do if we get hammered with snow like we did here in 2010.

Re: Snow. How deep?

I don't know since I got mine in march 2012 and we haven't had snow since but I can't wait to face my in laws long driveway that never gets plowed and drifts to a couple feet in some areas.. Always fun bashing thought the drifts to get to grandmas house(the kids love it). I just hope the stock tires do ok. I will probably get something slightly more aggressive when these wear out

Re: Snow. How deep?

I take the air dam off my WK for the winter. Definitely will be going through snow that deep where it would become a plough. In fact it will be coming off today...there's snow in the air...

Re: Snow. How deep?

My wife's '11 V6 made it through snow during the Christmas 2010 blizzard in NJ (hers was an early build that we got in 9/10) that was up to the bottom of the doors. We were parked in the driveway at a friend's house all day and night and came out to find the truck pretty well buried. They tried to convince us to spend the night, I said we'll be fine, and the Jeep proceeded to pull out of it in 4LO without a problem; 20" Forteras and all. The look on their faces were priceless. Hopefully we'll get some real snow this year so I can test out my '12.

This was a few days later after the roads had mostly been plowed:

Re: Snow. How deep?

My philosophy is that if the weather is so severe that a Grand Cherokee is near it's limits you probably shouldn't be driving.

Re: Snow. How deep?

If it is light fluffy snow you can drive through some pretty deep stuff. At that point it depends on how good your tires are. Best not to try it so deep that you are pushing it out of the way. I tried that once in wind-driven, dense snow in a '90 Bronco with traction lock on both axles and it rode right up on the skid plates so all four tires where 1/2" above the pavement. It took me two hours to dig that truck out.

Re: Snow. How deep?

We did not have any significant snow this year so far to actually test the Jeep out, but we are expecting some tomorrow night. I once got stuck in my old ZJ when it got high centered in snow. Took a while to dig it out. That year we got tons of snow and my wife's Mini cooper got buried in show. The only thing that was visible was the antenna of that car. LOL.

BTW, I love the new snow day commercial.

Cheers,
-A

Re: Snow. How deep?

As part of my job I am required to be at work regardless of weather or anything else. The Jeep does not have the ground clearance or the positraction or the wheelbase of the big Dodge and I dont expect it to be able to compete. But I hope it will get me through as needed.

Re: Snow. How deep?

Have had no issues with my '12 GC Overland in the past 13 months.

I'll never forget driving from Colorado to Nebraska after a blizzard, making it all the way in an F150 Supercrew, where I had snow drifts of 2 to 3 feet high in my driveway.

Told the wife "No problem - I have 4 wheel drive" - I gunned it and promptly high centered the F150 in the driveway. About 90 minutes of digging later (the snow was rock hard, you could stand on top of the snowpack), I didn't ever get that cocky again.

But hey, now I have a Jeep!!! Watch out driveways, shovels are handy.

Re: Snow. How deep?

The GC is a very heavy vehicle, even with stock tires try dialing select trac to snow. I wouldn't worry about any snow other than hard pack that's been piled up, or if it is high enough to damage your air dam.
