Lightbulb Sold Order Detroit Pickup - Making Jeep More Profitable!

Come on Milous and Marlon.....help get this to the attention of the powers that be at Jeep.

I know this has been brought up numerous times before...

It seems to me that Jeep can pocket the shipping money and add it to their bottom line if they just had a factory pick up option. Sure they'd have to set up a mini "dealership area" for the dealer prep and customer pick up area and address any buyer inspection stuff (but heck the factory is right there for any issues). If the buyer finalizes everything with their ordering dealership (cash sale, lease, add-ons etc.), then why not allow a factory pickup option and save people time and money (nobody really wants the darn dealer badge on their Jeep anyway).....heck it would help the City of Detroit too as they would get "new car pickup tourism" money flowing in.

Come on.....push this through (not that I am anxious for my new GC or anything like that )

Re: Sold Order Detroit Pickup - Making Jeep More Profitable!

It would probably violate the contracts with the dealerships. They get paid to fix all those little things that are wrong on delivery.

I vote for factory delivery option too! GM figured out how to do it with Corvettes (you can pick up your new Corvette at the museum in Bowling Green, KY - assuming it's not in their makeshift basement by the time you get there); Chrysler needs to do this!

You do still pay the destination charge on factory delivery - I questioned this and was told it was part of the UAW contract with GM.

Re: Sold Order Detroit Pickup - Making Jeep More Profitable!

The uaw has no interest in the destination charges on a vehicle. That figure is set by Chrysler and has absolutely nothing to do with the uaw. None of the transportation services are uaw sponsored. This is simply the cost to ship the vehicle divided up amonst number of units. There is no man behind the curtain here.

And Chevrolet actually charges more for museum delivery, although it seems to be worth it amonst the customers that have opted for it.

Re: Sold Order Detroit Pickup - Making Jeep More Profitable!

Corvette has a special "Museum Delivery" option on the order sheet. $470 - $550 I think.

And the PDI is still done by a local dealership near the factory in Bowling Green before the car is transported to the display/pickup area at the Museum.

But the Museum takes over from there. And it includes a very special factory tour.

I did it on my 2001, and will do it again when I buy a 2015. ONLY way to go!
A special "Jeep Museum" might not be such a bad idea either!

Of course, the volume is easier to handle with Corvette where they only build 25 - 30,000 a year, compared to the volume at Jeep.

Re: Sold Order Detroit Pickup - Making Jeep More Profitable!

You can argue this point ad infinitum, but I seriously doubt it will ever happen. I don't think any manufacturing facility wants to add a layer of customer contact at their plant. Just another headache to deal with, and expense to absorb. That's what the dealer network is constructed to take care of.

Re: Sold Order Detroit Pickup - Making Jeep More Profitable!

Back in April of 2000, my wife and I picked up a new BMW Z3 at the factory in Spartanburg SC. A brand new program at the time, after educating my dealer here in Ct., everything went smoothly. We did not pay any destination charge, just a plane ticket to SC. Once we arrived at the airport, picked in a 7 series, followed by a nice sightseeing ride around the area, before being delivered to the Marriott. Dinner that night, breakfast the next morning, and then a tour of the BMW museum, a couple hours of fun on the road course and the skid pad for us both, then lunch. And then we were introduced to our new Baby in a beautiful glass walled atrium of an office, finished up the paperwork, and drove away about 4:00 in the afternoon. Yes, BMW does know how to do it! Very sweet. Headed home to Ct. via the Blue Ridge Parkway taking in the sights, a great week. Best new car delivery we ever had, or probably ever will! Still have the car with only 46K on it!

Re: Sold Order Detroit Pickup - Making Jeep More Profitable!

what is the point? A European delivery has all the makings of a European vacation for those who can afford it money and time wise.

but beautiful, scenic, entertaining...suburban Detroit? If it was Mackinac Bridge maybe or San Francisco or ... Durango Colorado with a trail guide and an organized off road trip, maybe. Factory delivery.... NO.

in fact let me be clear - a Colorado or Utah delivery with an attached off-road experience would be welcomed by both the community, the area dealerships and the local tourism.

I'd be willing to still pay the destination charge for the factory pickup...that's where they can pay for the dealer prep out of and the rest goes to Jeep for profit.

PDI used to be done by Cave City Chevrolet or Campbell in BG, but the new construction at the NCM now has facilities to do the entire PDI and prep there once it leaves the factory across the road. Much improved experience!
