I checked my EVIC settings and as I suspected, I already had the current gear set to ON. As you note, it is just so dim as to be useless.
If you turn it off, it honestly doesn't appear to make a lot of difference.

Strange because I can see my gear selection on my 2015 Overland, with or without sunglasses on. Sure, it is dim, but it's still clearly visible to me.

About 20% of folks have the kind of eye structure that makes it easy for them to pick out wildlife standing stock still in front of a foliage background. The rest of us have to wait till the critter moves before we can see it.

I believe you actually can set the gear number in the screen setup in one of the two top corners. In my Jeep I can see the gear number next to D but it is very faint. With my polarized sunglasses it is almost invisible.
