Steering jiggle over bumps

I have always noticed this but now that I have a new 2015 200 that has real nice steering feel this is really starting to annoy me. Is it just the overlands with the air suspension that do it ? On smooth roads it fine but on rough ones your always fighting the steering wheel. So what does everyone else think? Is it because of the soft air suspension?

I have no problems like that with the Quadra-Lift suspension.

Same no issues here with the air suspension.

Re: Steering jiggle over bumps

I know what you mean the decent bumps radiate through the steering wheel and it dances around when your hitting the bumps. my last car didn't do it figured it was the personality of this one and just how it was glad im not the only one that noticed it. doubt anything can be done probably just the way the jeep is don't know.

I have owned 3 overlands with the air suspension an 11, 12 and now the 14 and they have all done it so I think I can assume its normal. I wouldn't call it a problem, more of a characteristic . I was just trying to understand why it does it and if its just the air suspension models.

Re: Steering jiggle over bumps

I don't know if it would make a difference, but what size tires is everyone running?

I have 18's

It's just a characteristic of the vehicle. My 2013 Overland with air suspension did it and my current 2014 Limited with standard suspension also does it. It is annoying.

I honestly have yet to experience this and I have the limited trim as well. we have some shitty roads where we live, and would of thought I'd notice this by now. is it at a certain speed?

The entire steering mechanism is different on V6 models vs. V8. Which do you have?

Steering jiggle over bumps

It is definitely the sad truth. I as well have had a 11, 12 and 14 with 18"s 20"s, stock tires, lifted with big tires, standard suspension and air suspension, v6 and v8. They all do it! Even my buddies new diesel does it. I've even switched to srt reps with no change either. To the others who say theirs don't, they are either lying to themselves, drive on a smooth turnpike or streets day to day or just plain lack the awareness. Still in the end, I love the jeep but definitely annoying.

Re: Steering jiggle over bumps

Heh...I posted about this quite some time back as well. Rough roads (and it doesn't have to be horribly rough) will cause a little "jiggle" in the steering wheel. Sharp bumps can create a quick back and forth jiggle. It doesn't seem to affect tracking but it's annoying. I've also noticed that on roads that "undulate" a bit that the steering wheel will track back and forth slightly with the undulation. Not hard or a "pull"... but if you watch the steering wheel without input it will shift back and forth slightly with the road undulation.

I suspect, at least with the air suspension, that it's related to the relative softness of that suspension. The setup seems to allow fairly easy up and down movement of each wheel for the first 1/2 inch of travel before it provides more resistance. As each side moves that much, the steering linkage on that side gets effectively shorter by a small amount providing a small steering input.

v6....and ironically I did just today notice it on a part of road I drive daily. I could see this being annoying if it occurred frequently, but so far only certain road conditions triggers this.
