Top Gear is a horrible and terribly biased car show! They voted the Ford F150 as the world's worst vehicle, although it is (was at that time) the world's best selling vehicle.

They took the time to explain what a pickup truck is and how useless it is. Yeah, that's why we buy trucks...because they are useless! Smug bastards and idiots....sheez.

Yes, the performance with the diesel is a bit better, but at $4500 US more the real number in my mind is fuel economy. In my area, diesel is generally priced about 15-20 % more +/- more than gasoline. Since the diesel here appears to give roughly proportionally similar higher mileage, the break even is quite far off. Yes, it is a superior motor (assuming reliability & resale, depreciation are similar, etc), but at $4500 more value must factor into the equation. See here:
Do Diesel Cars And Trucks Save You Money? Not Always - Forbes

We are going to revisit the issue in another year or so and see how well the diesel sells and if they put the damned parking sensors on the Overland. For now, I'll stick with the 335xi and my wife her Sienna van. Might as well put more miles on the old minivan while the kids still need to be everywhere and anywhere for a few more years.
If you want sub 5's or even 6's for that matter, this isn't the truck for you then. Either an SRT or stick with what you know. Also with diesel priced so high I understand.

I'm OK with slower times in a truck. Ruled out the SRT due to price, abysmal fuel economy and near zero off road ability.

Don't understand why diesel is more expensive in the US as a rule. I thought it required less refining. Perhaps in a year or two, when we revisit the Jeep issue, the diesel's value will be better known and quantifiable. I neither need nor want to be among the first people with one. I'd like to see how the depreciation curve goes. Besides, still waiting for a few more bugs to be worked out and Jeep USA to add the damned front parking sensors to the Overland. When I called Jeep to note this omission the Representative said that this was a common complaint. Perhaps they'll get the message for the '15 model year.

Furthermore, I would add that if you are concerned with 0-60 times, your driving habits will yield poor economy in any 5k lbs vehicle!

The diesel will provide better relative economy under higher output conditions whereas a gas motor will suffer. Aggressive driving is more akin to towing with respect to economy. A Diesel's mpg do not drop drastically like gas motors when under load. That's why they are preferred and can run on the autobahn with much better economy.

One of our Australian members video'd his tuned 3.0 CRD doing 6.8s 0-60. That's new Hemi time. You could do your 0-60's and still keep it up in the mid 20 mpg's in the CRD.

Right, the more economical thing is to buy something 3 years old and keep it for 10+ years. But...I'm a car guy and I get a lot of enjoyment out of my cars...its worth the expense to me.

TopGear is entertainment...nothing more.

All I can say is.......It's a Jeep thing. BMW owners wouldn't understand. Jeep owners will.

Nobody said BMW was losing money! They are making money and executing their business model very effectively. Part of that model is to charge extra for the vehicle then tell you the maintenance is "free"....apparently it is appealing to their customers who admittedly have more disposable income and don't want to be bothered with seeking lower cost maintenance solutions. I give them kudos for recognizing what their customers want...I'm just not one of them.

To quote PT Barnum "There is a sucker born every minute"
Go to your dealer and ask what it cost for a repair or maintenance. Then go to local garages around town. I GUARANTEE that the local garages charge less, often less than half the price at a car dealer. Now you decide, do you want to pay up front for a maintenance program that will cost you up to TWICE as much as if you pay as you go. Sure, they are making a great deal of money...off of the "suckers born every minute".

I've experienced no bugs, and I don't live near this beach. Just FYI.
