I test drove the Q5. COMPLETELY different vehicle. It's a nice car, but more of a boulevard cruiser.

Also, the GC interior is much nicer IMO.

GC exterior is nicer IMO. Not sure I would personally pick the Q5 over the GC, although I suspect Q5 reliability is better.

The Q5 is a completely different vehicle than the GC yes, but its very comparable to the X3. I'm not saying choose the Q5 over the GC, I'm saying choose it over the X3.

The Q5 is indeed interesting. Not a consideration, though. No Audi dealer anywhere near me.

Here's my question for you...what is the "thrill"? Is it handling, acceleration, luxury? You could get the Hemi...but handling is going to be what it is.

Been asking myself exactly that. Sorry for the long answer, but you asked!

Why do I love a BMW? The unique mix of handling, luxury, great acceleration (with right engine), engineering, fuel economy and, much as I hate to admit it and to a modest extent, prestige. I love the ability to effortlessly carve around the inattentive and doddering while retaining a measure of all weather capability in xi AWD models. Most BMWs have a certain "feel" non available in all but a few other makes.

What don't I like about BMW? Getting too "fussy", i.e can't just swap a battery without dealer programming & no dipstick. Even fuses are now hidden! Things that should be standard often aren't. More & more "Why tech" as opposed to "HIgh tech".

As for a JGC? I love the rugged practicality and ability to go places a BMW would cower from. While a JGC can't carve through traffic, it can, however, go around it & over curbs that would smash BMW rims. Properly equipped there is a measure of luxury, but the dealer experience is light years behind BMW. No doubt this will come across as snobby, even though I don't mean it as such, but all 3 local Jeep dealers I visited were populated with employees and customers alike of a way different demographic than anything I've experienced at BMW. Many Jeep employees were slovenly and ill spoken. Some the customers were, um....worse. Way worse. Think "Peopleofwalmart.com" worse.

The Hemi would help the power deficit, but I can't abide its dismal fuel economy. In an ideal world I'd get another BMW & my wife a JGC. But, for now we need to keep her Sienna van due to family needs & the lease on my BMW runs in 2 months. Even at a discount buying the 335xi isn't worth it. I'd lease another, but am increasingly finding a 3 just too small for a variety of reasons. Love the 535, but don't want to spend that much on a car. Money is better put towards investments. My wife suggested the X3 as a compromise. Still fast with the 300hp engine and easier to get into/out of plus a hatch that actually allows me to carry something beyond a suitcase.

Whew, a lotta typing, but I hope you get the idea!

Re: Still can't decide: Overland or BMW X3

Doesn't seem snobbish to me at all, I'm a Lexus owner and yes the Jeep dealers suck. You just have to prepare yourself that it will not be an upscale experience at all...its really no worse than any other mainstream dealer, but it is absolutely not a luxury car dealer.

My advice? Get a 535 and keep your wife's Sienna. When you can, replace IT for the Jeep. You can do REALLY well on a 5 series lease, and you are accustomed to leasing. I don't see how an Overland would be any cheaper than a 535 lease, and you have the fuel cost differences and the maintenance on the Jeep vs the free maintenance on the BMW to factor in as well.

I just shopped a 535 before I got the GS in November. They have good leases.

You want the BMW, you're going to miss it. Get the 535.

Again, apples and oranges. First let me say that I bought a '13 GC, but I was kind of torn too. The Jeep interior is second to none, and it can go where no Audi could even get near. Nut the Q5 3.0 has blazing acceleration, and the AWD helps it take hairpin turns that will change the shape of your face....It's nothing like driving an SUV. Ohhhh...If only we could get all the cars we wanted..... A 911, a 62 Vette, maybe one of those BMW M6s.... Or maybe a Jag......

A properly equipped 535 was just south of $700/month on a lease at $500 over invoice, while we could lease an Overland w/ Adv tech & offroad packages for around $540 based on 2-3% under invoice if memory serves. Thats a big difference--and the extra $ is going towards retirement. The BMW as equipped was around 63-64 MSRP & Overland $49K. Much as I love BMW, I fear the fun would wear off after a few payments. The 335xi runs about $580/month. Was looking to save some money & add to retirement. Those of us soon to reach a "certain age" can boost 401k investments beyond what is normally allowed. On a personal note I try to live 80/20- 80% responsible & 20% fun.

We need to keep the Sienna another 2-3 years as we're burning 15-18K miles/year on family activities. Might as well use the van up. BY the time we're ready the WK2 will likely be the former model and Jeep onto WK3. I toyed with your suggestion reverse, which my wife suggested. Get the JGC now & use it to replace the van in 2-3 years then get something I want assuming the budget so allows.

Either way, I have a LOT of figuring to do! Thanks so much for the time & input.
