I've had several BMWs & rarely had any issues thus far. Then again. I've never had one past 60-70K or so. The last few have been leased and turned in at 36K.
I hear you, I'm pretty much done with BMW, their cars have gotten too expensive and I don't care for new look of the interiors.
My BMWs have been pretty reliable, I just don't care for the free maintenance bs and all that comes with it.

Exactly why we got the Sienna & have kept it. We went from 9-10K miles/year to 15-18 when travel soccer for one and theater for the other one kicked into high gear. The stroller stage is easy. I had to drive 45 mins last Saturday and be AT the soccer field by 645AM for a 730 game. Ouch. Can't see a JGC for another year or 2 so long as the Sienna, which has AWD & factory HID lights, is still running well at 114K. The plan is to drive it for another 2 years or so and then think about a replacement.

Oh wait, they have that already. I think its called a Porsche Cayenne! Too much $$ for me.
No, it is called SRT. If you want trail rated badge get yourselve badge for $5 and skid plates and you are good to go. Well as far as mpg is concerned I don't think Cayenne does 30. Wonder what the new diesel engine will do 0-60 and performance wise.

I also think that once in a while, I will pop the center caps off and clean & spray something to prevent further rusting. Should be an easy task assuming one can pop the center caps without removing the wheel.

My 2011 looks like this. I'd like to paint them with a heavy duty engine paint to make them look good, but otherwise it is not affecting anything

Mild rust should be easily removable with WD-40..... if you don't remove the wheels very often, you might want to consider a rust preventing coating.

I would seriously look into the diesel, it has the acceleration of the hemi without the hemi fuel consumption. I'm just starting to give it some in sport mode on my '14 and it is seriously leaving a big smile on my dial. You can feel the suspension harden up, but I would doubt that it comes up to a X3 in handling. I wanted the best of both worlds, acceleration and fuel economy and I believe I got it.

We may contemplate a diesel in a year or 2, even though at US gas prices and our average mileage it would take us a decade just to break even,

For now, we are getting another 335xi (a 2014) and will hold off on a Jeep until then. Our hope is that the Overland will have front parking sensors by then, something my wife VERY much needs. Seems kinda stupid that only the Summit has them.....

Totally agree. Diesels are very underrated in the USA but once they start bringing down the price (and gas prices keep increasing) you should be seeing them more often. There's a reason they are so popular everywhere else. The torque from a 3.0 litre turbodiesel is pretty impressive especially in the smaller Q5 and X3's. Plus a diesel has so much more potential because you can reprogram or chip far beyond what you can do to a gas/petrol engine.

My brother in law went from a C63 to a X5 3.0L diesel and wanted more acceleration. So he went and got a reprogram and managed to squeeze more than a 30% out of it. The torque increase alone was insane and jumped from 590 ft/lbs up to 800 ft/lbs. Cost him AUD$1,200. I don't think you can get similar increases from a gas engine at that price.

Keep in mind I used to work for Cummins and now work for Cat so I am a bit biased towards diesels and have seen first hand what they can do and how far they have come. It still doesn't doesn't explain why I bought an SRT though.

I think most cars can make it 70k with minimal issues. The ones that require big ticket repairs at 100k+ are the ones I avoid. I may be eating my words with the quadra-lift when I get my GC. We'll see.

I looked at finding a used 7 series several years ago, thinking they would be reliable...nope. Massive electrical issues, window motors, plastic radiators failing, interior deterioration....all big ticket repairs. I bought a used Toyota Avalon and never looked back. Not a single issue with 160k total, with 65k of pure abuse from my wife.

BMW free maintenance is waiting for an oil change until computer tells you to go in which is usually past 15,000 miles or after one year if you don't put on enough miles.

No such thing as free maintenance. You paid that upfront when you bought the vehicle. I'm sure they probably tack on 5-10 grand to the price tag. Trust me, they are not going to lose $$$.
