Still can't decide: Overland or BMW X3

Talk about 2 totally different vehicles- after years of BMW driving I am pondering either a loaded X3 with the 3 liter engine (as in the 335xi) or a JGC V6 Overland. Gas mileage too crappy with the Hemi.

The spouse likes the Jeep, but I'm still not sure I can drive an SUV every single day. Our other vehicle is a Toyota Sienna. I love the 535xi, but just can't justify the money.

The X3 is almost as fast as my 335xi, but more comfortable and practical. The Overland is nice and soft and can go places the BMW fears to even look at, but I still fear quality and long term reliability as well as the lack of sportiness & ability to effortlessly pass the doddering. Wouldn't have either without a warranty of sorts.

Sorry for the rambling. Looking to see if others faced a similar decision & if they're happy.

Not knocking the x3 here but doesn't it seem kind of like a feminine vehicle? I've truly never seen a man driving one. I know there are guys out there that own and drive the x3, but the word fruity comes to mind.

I think I'd feel like shaq in that Buick commercial getting into to a pint sized lacrosse if I owned an x3.

I always wonder why someone would buy a mini SUV like the x or the compass, they sell so there must be a market for them. It's just so small looking. I don't think I could fit inside that thing. I'm 6'3 and that mini BMW is like 5'9 I think. I guess I could drive down the road with my head out the sunroof-joking.

If you're going BMW, spring for the big boy and get the x5, if you can, in my opinion.

I know BMW has superior service, but there is nothing in this world that would have me driving a compact SUV like a Kia soul or BMW x3. I need a v8 and some head and elbow room. And I surely don't want to pay an extra 20 k for an emblem on my hood.

I'm curious if the cost to maintain a BMW post warranty is reasonable like jeep, less expensive or more expensive, let me know if you have any idea.

Anyway, hope you enjoy the 335.

Good luck!

Quite expensive to maintain out of warranty. Parts are very expensive.

That said...if my Jeep is anything out of warranty like it has been within warranty, it will be expensive to maintain too.

Absolutely, agree 100%.

All kidding aside...there are 5 WK2s on my block. Every one is driven by a woman, including mine. For the Jeep, read the OP's posts. Who really wanted the Jeep? His wife. He was debating whether he could handle driving it until she took it over and he could get something he really wanted. All SUVs are basically "girls cars". If you're not secure enough in your masculinity to drive something you want to drive that is driven mostly by women, buy a Viper or something.

Even though I ordered a 335xi, I rather doubt many females buy an X3 3.5 300hp twin turbo. I never considered this a "girl's car', not that I'd much care either way. Now, if we're talking a Lexus RX--now THAT is a "girl's car".

We considered the X3 as it is wider (more comfortable) and a little easier to get in/out of. In the end, the lease rates were far better for the 335xi, which is why we went that way. Loved the 535xi, but just didn't want to spend that much on a car.

I recently went through the same dilemma with BMW/Jeep. I drove BMWs for the last 12 years. I had a '99 328i, '06 328i, '08 X3 and lastly an '11 528i.

I wanted an SUV and I looked at the new X3s (I don't need a guzzling X5 and the wife liked the X3). My biggest issue was that after 12 years, it felt like the same damn car every time. It didn't feel like I had something new. Just the new car scent and the same damn interior. Very little changed.

I looked at the JGC, Audi, X3, Tahoe, Acadia and even the Buick SUVs.

In the end, I took my 528i to CarMax, got a great deal and my dealer picked me up at the CarMax so I could hop into my new '14 Overland. Just pulled the trigger 2 weeks ago.

My reasons:
-More features than my BMW had.
-My monthly payment dropped $100/mo (even with extra warranty to cover 15k/yr miles on the lease).
-My insurance dropped $600/year.
-Navigation is amazing compared to the BMW crappy system. Horrible routing too!
-Touch screen compared to that annoying wheel to enter data.
-Cheaper gas.
-The '14 JGC actually has a very smooth ride, for 20" wheels.
-I can actually get our kid's stroller in the back (528i trunk was big, opening was not).
-I can see the road ahead of me, past other cars since I'm not sitting 12" above the street.

The dealership experience is VASTLY different and that will take a little getting used to. You're pampered at most BMW shops but I've built up a good rapport with the Svc dept at my dealer and they're pretty cool with me. Plus I like that i can go to the Goodyear shop 2 blocks from my office for maintenance as an option.

So far I'm VERY happy with my vehicle and I'm looking forward to the next 3 years. If I've had no major issue, I'll most likely get another one.

While we are quite past the stroller days, we still have a Sienna minivan which we'll keep for another year or two. The plan is to get an Overland in addition to the 335xi. We need another year of seasoning on the Overland to see if they add front park sensors and a few more options. I'd be happy with a BMW on one side of the garage & Overland on the other.

You are right about the dealer experience. When i walked into my local Jeep dealer I felt like I was in Kmart.

I'm pretty secure. You're the one who sounds butt hurt and insecure. It's simply my opinion. If my opinion upsets you maybe you check into reading a bedtime children's book. They are usually pretty soothing.

As for the Viagra link, again, you sound like your feelings were hurt, so hurt that you went searching, not very far I suspect, to find a link for Viagra. Funny.

My opinion about suv's differs from yours. I think they are for people who want to be able to go anywhere. I take mine offroad regulary, couldn't do that with a viper or an x3. But the viper is sweet, and I do want one. Who wouldn't, if they could, right?

Back to the meds suggestion, I posted an opinion and you flew off the handle a little bit. Not mad at you, but you did a little bit. It's okay to admit. I think maybe you should limit you're intake a bit. Someone so quick to suggest medication is probably on medication. My suggestion to you is to go exercise. Run outdoors, stop doing whatever drug you do that causes you to experience butthurtism when reading opinions that differ from yours.

Again, just my opinion SW. Cheer up pal, you'll live longer. And remember, exercise.

Wink.

LOL, my feelings aren't hurt at all. I don't own a BMW X3...I just find you amusing because you're driving a vehicle driven probably 85% of the time by women and you're calling other vehicles "girls cars" and chose to have a little fun at your expense. Only person going "off the handle" about it here is you. Can't take a joke?

My opinion about suv's differs from yours. I think they are for people who want to be able to go anywhere.
Good for you. 95% of the other people in the world buy JGC's to pick their kids up from school, take them to soccer practice and ballet recitals. How is you using this vehicle for your purpose any different than a man driving an X3? Both are vehicles overwhelmingly driven by women to the grocery store.

My wife loves driving her "girls car" around...when its not in the shop. Glad you enjoy your "girls car" too and can feel "manly" in it LOL

SW, if you are honest with yourself you would admit younger girls generally drive the liberty, x3 and other smaller SUV's and most people on the forum that own the jeep GC are guys. Sure there are a few gals here, and I think that's awesome. But the majority are male. That smells like opinion twisted into fact. But, start a pole and find out for yourself. Numbers don't lie.

For you to say all SUVs are girl cars is laughable. Again, I think you are stating opinion and passing it off as fact. And for you to try to use 4 people who "live on your block" as a basis for your ridiculous argument destroys any credibility you may have had. I like you though, you're easy to take apart.

If you consider this fun, keep bringing the BS analysis and ill keep exposing you. I'm not bothered by you personally, just by your borderline stupid and totally manufactured "facts"

My problem is I can't resist telling it like it is, and your problem, from what I can tell is, that the reality of what I said makes you feel inferior in some way, for some reason, hence the Viagra comeback when you ran out made up facts.

But again, I like you.

Did you relax yet?

Cheers!

As far as financing goes, it's a good idea if you can get 0 percent apr or close to it. But that's just my opinion.

Why give a dealer that pile of cash when you can keep it in your pocket?

I did pay cash for my boat because I didn't want a pleasure item like that to be a monthly expense. If you've ever owned a boat though you'd know they are a monthly expense by nature-gas, maintenance ect. Boat=Break Out Another Thousand.

Just for fun. An article about the 10 most popular vehicles for women from Forbes magazine:

Women Seek Different Features When Purchasing a New Vehicle Than Men Do : ROAD & TRAVEL Magazine

An excerpt:

Women might be more inclined than men to buy smaller vehicles, but many prefer large models. Three sport utility vehicles made our list that takes into account both luxury and non-luxury vehicles: The Honda Pilot in seventh place (with 60.28 percent female primary drivers), the Mazda’s CX-7 in eighth (60.19 percent), and the Jeep Grand Cherokee in 10th (59.81 percent).
The #10 overall most popular vehicle with women is the Jeep Grand Cherokee. 59.81% of purchasers are women. Remember, that's purchasers. Our Jeep is bought and financed in my name...but its my wife's vehicle so I would count as one of the 40% of male purchasers.

That means the Grand Cherokee is MORE popular with women than the X3, X5, Liberty, Explorer, Lexus RX, and every other SUV on the road.

Redskins don't play until tomorrow. I'm having fun...if you aren't then perhaps you're spending too much time on here.

2 happiest days of a boat owners life - first best day is the day you buy it, the second best day is the day you sell it.

Definition of a boat: A hole in the water you throw money into :lol::lol:

#161 ·
Jw, the way I see it, if a person owns riverfront/soundfront property a boat is a must have. I don't have it like that just yet, early 30's, there's time. I would have been better off relying on my brother in laws boat. Kick him 20 for gas and I'm free and clear.

The longer I own it the less it gets used. I wouldn't say I regret the purchase but I do understand that money could've been spent a little more wisely.

Boats. SMH.

Agreed. Thread has turned into a pissing contest and it's irrelevant. Drive whatever you like that has the features you want.

This is a question nobody on this site would ever think to ask.

#177 ·
Just like me to ask something weird. You see, I like both trucks AND fast German cars. That's why I'm sticking with a 335xi for me and now encouraging the wife to get a JGC Overland. Much as I like the Overland, for day to day use it is ponderous. I've gotten used to 0-60 in 4.7 or so, making even the Hemi seem lethargic.

The X3 3.0L Turbodiesel is a beast. Plus, you can chip it for more power quite easily. It may be smaller and more posh but don't discount it.

Then there's the Audi SQ5 twin turbodiesel Small and pricey but whoah is it an absolute monster...for a diesel. (More torque than the SRT by the way.)

I was about to get out of my SRT purchase and seriously considered the SQ5...especially when you compare the fuel economy. I'm keeping the SRT and don't think my boss is going to like the fuel bill of my SRT too much. :)

#179 ·
Because you are interested in the SRT, you are obviously not into off-roading. In that case, you are better off with one of the posh mummy school busses. It will keep the boss happy :)

#180 ·
Not quite. The boss is actually the guy I work for who gave me a fuel card as part of my package.

I'm wise enough to know that if I bought a 4x4 I would rarely take it off road and want more power on road. I'm sure you've all read the threads. Solution SRT.
