Stone Chipped Windshield :(

Driving along minding my business going 20-25. Dang rock from the car in front of me, probably a good 3-4 car lengths ahead, smacks the windshield. Thought at first it was just my water bottle in the cup holder as it was a similar sound. Noticed a nice star on the passenger side lower windshield portion. Bummer

Getting it repaired Monday, its out of site and I think its a good canidate to get filled which should hide 90% off the defect. Better then having the OEM windshield taken out and then requesting a new OEM windshield, having it all resealed, realigned with the mirror stuff etc etc, then worry about leaks.

oh btw haha maybe tomorrow.

Re: Stone Chipped Windshield :(

Sorry to hear. I do feel your pain though, I have a chip in my windshield about eye level on the driver's side about 1in from the side. So frustrating as how much $ a new non-chipped windshield would be. Best of luck getting it filled and no more chips (well only the kind you eat).

Re: Stone Chipped Windshield :(

I had the same thing happen to me within my first 500 miles. It was on the driver side right at eye level. I had mine repaired and it came out pretty decent. It's definitely not perfect, but after reading about issues people were having here with the automatic wipers and whatnot, I am confident I made the right decision.

Re: Stone Chipped Windshield :(

my dad owns his own auto glass company. The chip repair is very cool stuff, if done right you won't be able to tell anything was there. He filled a chip I had in my last car, it was a small rock but it splintered out to about the size of a nickel, maybe a little bigger. It looked like a speck of dirt when it was done and could not even tell it was splintered.

Most insurance covers the chip repair 100% with no copay either. good luck!

Re: Stone Chipped Windshield :(

Thanks everyone. I've seen one chip repair done and it was still pretty noticeable but I think its because some of the outside glass was actually missing by that time. Mine is an impact shot, thus its not actually broken on the outside nor inside, a windshield is like a sandwich and the stuff in the middle is what splinters I was told usually.

I've seen another chip done and as 77red stated, it looks like only a speck of dirt and that was right below the drivers "pretend window" as many call it.

If mine comes out as a speck of dirt, I'd be happy. Its no longer just a windshield replacement, as when they take off the mirror and remount, everything has to be realigned etc as John stated so I'll go the least aggressive approach first and just try the repair! I also never had any windshield leaks as others from factory have had and don't want to jinx it

Re: Stone Chipped Windshield :(

I just had a rock chip repaired on my windshield last friday!
I was a similar star type, it was the kind where the windshield looked black at impact point and then about two tiny crack lines. the whole thing is smaller than a dime. Luckily mine is in the center of windshield just below the mirror so it's not in my line of sight. It's definitely better than is was before but you can still see it.

I also wanted to just do the repair and not have to worry about a new windshield, especially since driving on the Long Island Expressway every day with all the trucks (my chip came from a semi)i will most likely get more chips......

your doing the right thing getting it repaired!

I will say that even replacing a windshield these days is no big deal. I am on my 5th windshield in my other vehicle (Montana and Colorado are hard on windshields). They look the exact same as OEM each time.

Re: Stone Chipped Windshield :(

+1 to being able to do fill repair anytime you can get away with it. Hope it comes out clean for you, J.

We typically have to do full replacement of SUV windshields every 2-3 years from mountain driving, rock impacts, and overall pitting. We'll even live with cracked glass and wait until late spring to replace given the constant exposure. Even sportcars with raked glass get hit regularly here.

Re: Stone Chipped Windshield :(

Nothing like that with us yet, but the WK2's windshield seems to get dinged more than most. In only 8k miles our windshield already has a number of itsy chips and scratches from stuff tossed up from the road. I suspect that air flow resulting from aggressive reduction of wind resistance is the culprit. Counterintuitive perhaps, but I can't come up with a better explanation.
