We received a cargo bag (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0024ALBJ8) for an upcoming trip and are concerned about using it on our sunroof. Does anyone have information regarding the strength / ability of the panoramic sunroof to accept a load? Has anyone used a bag like this with the panoramic sunroof?
Although the glass is tempered, I wouldn't put anything on the glass. Get the crossbars and attach your load to them which transfers the weight to the siderails that are mounted to the steel portion of the roof. Even those have a limit of 150 lbs.
Why not use a hitch rack?? It doesn't affect wind resistance and it is more protected...plus you don't have to break your back getting everything up there and it is way cheaper.....and it holds 500lbs!
I just don't see a plus with putting cargo on the roof, unless it is over 3-4'.
Have to get some cross rails. i'm a huge fan of the Thule M.O.A.B. also. It's lightweight, can be installed in less than 15 minutes and you only need one person to put it up. Check backcountry.com. Sometimes they will have all the Thule stuff for 20% off. The MOAB also works with either the Mopar cross rails or the Thule Aero Bars (which I have). And your Jeep looks like it's ready for a expedition with the basket up top.
Hi Peckmv
Found this post, when you say 150 lbs total on the roof rack ?
Have a 2015 GC overland, would like to get cross bars for mine
But not sure of the total weight limit with the panoramic sunroof ?
Any help would be appreciated
My situation is this, the weight limit that I am after is the
Load on the crossbars (whispbar maybe). I plan on putting
A kayak on the crossbars weight (68 LB). But with the panoramic
sunroof, the weight limit is different then one with out. The hitch is
going to be used for something else.

Good point. I wasn't aware of differences on the rails themselves.
Keep in mind that with something like a Kayak, the Wind is probably WAY more of a factor than it's weight. The downward or upward force could be 100's of lbs at 70 mph. It's really hard to make it neutral.
As well as sideways gusts. Think of college kids holding a mattress on roof by hand going 35mph to their dorm
I hail my canoe on my Yakima rack with no issues. I have the Pano roof. I tie the bow and stern down as well. The canoe barely budges. Mind you I also use the Yakima Keel Over canoe kit the essentially pinches the outside of the gunnels to the rack. My route takes me at speeds of 80-120km/hr. Blasts from transports are not noticeable and windy days just make a bit more noise.
Canoe pictured us about 50lbs. My other is about 80. Your kayak should slip through the air much better.

Thanks Tony
Having a pano roof was my main concern structurally for the
total weight (rack and cargo). Would have no concern if I had a
Solid roof on the jeep.
