Subwoofer too loud - Grand Cherokee 2014 Limited

I own Grand Cherokee 2014 Limited for the last 5 months and I am still annoyed with the sub-woofer loudness. I have the bass frequency on the equalizer all the way down (-9), speed volume turned off and surround off and the bass is STILL too loud for any input.

Streaming online music through Pandora or Spotify through Bluetooth is the same. Now that the latest Spotify app includes an equalizer I put the bass frequency all the way down. A combination of bass reduced to minimum on uConnect and streaming app on the phone makes is OK to listen but that just doesn't sound right. Why is the bass so exaggerated?

Sometimes I just want to disconnect the darn woofer. I hope it's not because the manufacturer is trying to please the crowd that doesn't understand how the bass can be too loud - "if your ears are not bleeding then the bass isn't loud enough" kind

Does anyone else has the same issue?

I believe that you're the first person on the forum to complain of the sub-woofer being too loud.

Hell, I can't even tell if mine is working 90% of the time.

Re: Subwoofer too loud - Grand Cherokee 2014 Limited

Yep, I find it is very boomy, I have it set in the negatives, and the mid and upper in the positive, but on different tracks it can still be excessive. There have been quite a few owners who have swapped out the door speakers for focals, and these run a lot louder, so you may find it helps overpower the bass a bit.....

Re: Subwoofer too loud - Grand Cherokee 2014 Limited

Agree that it's way too loud. Very boomy as previously described. I have mine down to about -2 or -3 and it's about right for my tastes from most FM sources. You could probably take it to a really good car audio shop and ask if they can add a potentiometer, but this would be dangerous for your warranty. I think there are two issues: sheer volume, crossovers. Either the sub is handling frequencies that are too high or the rest of the speakers are handling frequencies that are too low.

This is in a 2015 Overland BTW.

Re: Subwoofer too loud - Grand Cherokee 2014 Limited

This is the complete opposite of all the posts I've read related to the upgraded Alpine system. Everyone said the bass is too low... Perhaps there was a change for the 2015s?

Re: Subwoofer too loud - Grand Cherokee 2014 Limited

Mine is a Jan 2014 build, the sub lacks low end drive, instead it pushes out a muffled boom. So I'd agree it is under powered, but the boominess is still a prominent characteristic. I'd like to replace the doors and sub with focals, but might need to stick a new amp on the sub too. A project for another time.....

Re: Subwoofer too loud - Grand Cherokee 2014 Limited

Any of you that have an under powered sub actually tried changing the polarity of the sub wires (+) (-) to (-)(+)?. That might fix your problem as people can make mistakes during manufacturing.

Greetings,

I agree. This is a 2 ohm connection, thus there are 2 pairs of subwoofer wires.

OP, bring it and let them check it for you. This way they can say it your fault if anything happens if you do it on your end.

Best for now.

Re: Subwoofer too loud - Grand Cherokee 2014 Limited

I have a 2014 Overland built in the fall of 2013 and the bass is usually too loud for me. Strangely enough, standing right outside it's barely audible so at least I'm not bothering other people nearby when I crank it up a bit.

Re: Subwoofer too loud - Grand Cherokee 2014 Limited

might sound dumb, but ive found that if I go to my EQ settings and just press the - then + (to put the levels back to where I have them set) it cleans up the sound. It seems like by making any adjustment to the EQ it cleans up the sound by kicking in your personal settings. I do this habitually now every time i get in the car.

There also appears to be a "feature" in the EQ, that every time you start the vehicle, you have to go to the EQ and set it again. In other words, you set it on the negative, it could be running flat. Few folks have noted this even on current UConnect.

It is boomy, even on the Overland. Sorta makes one nostalgic for the old Cerwin Vega "boom-tink" speaker systems.

Re: Subwoofer too loud - Grand Cherokee 2014 Limited

I believe that the loose mid-bass is actually coming from the front door speakers. While working on wiring in the boot (trunk) I had the sub removed... and drove the car several times noticing that the bass was still uncontrolled, and excessive unless attenuated.

Cheers,
Steve
