Summit (2017) Active Noise Cancelation Analysis

I did a fairly careful test over the weekend of what Active Noise Cancelation does.

I compared it using a professional GenRad SPL Meter and didn't see a whole lot of difference. Maybe 3dB (which is significant).

But then I realized there is a problem with using the SPL meter. It's listening for the peak of any frequency. Even ones you might not even hear.

So then I recorded the ambient noise with a fairly good Olympus Hand Held Digital Recorder.

I made sure to go the same speed, using ACC.

Going over the same section of the road.

I removed the Fuse on the Amp to Disable it.

The image below is a Spectrum Analysis. It basically shows the level at each frequency. This is done over a 6 second period of it Enabled and not enabled.

Note that the scales are slightly different.

A 3dB difference is significant.

By memory, which can be completely wrong, it felt like higher frequency, harsher noises were reduced. The low frequency stuff did not feel like it changed. Like someone suddenly added more insulation. Harsh sounds were more muffled. Or like a window is open a crack and you just shut it.

I sure wish I could turn Active Noise Cancelation off and on while driving. So I could A/B it better to my ear and rule out any other possible variables between runs.

Climate was OFF. Mic was hand held near my ear. It really should be on a tripod.

Also keep in mind if there was more ambient noise it may be more aggressive about reducing it.

Is the car quiet when driving and listening to the radio?

Was eco mode on?

That graph makes sense and in addition to the 3db, that smoothing is interesting.

When you turn on the radio, it's like putting on headphones.

Eco was on.

I still want to try a test playing a "Silent" track.

The broad decrease in high frequency doesn't make sense though.
That would be very hard to do.

I may try again with Mic on a Tripod for a more accurate A/B.

Re: Summit (2017) Active Noise Cancelation Analysis

I thought I ready somewhere back when it was introduced on the Summit that the majority of the benefit was for the Hemi MDS, canceling out the exhaust sound when the engine operated in 4 cylinder mode.

Will have to search for that tidbit to see if I can find it.

How about instead of active noise cancellation, they just get rid of MDS! It's a horrible system!

If I'm cruising on the highway in 8th gear and toggle ECO or Sport mode there is no audible change on the 3.6L.

I have yet to notice any MDS noise, which drove me crazy on the '14. However, I never noticed it on the '14 until I hit around 5,000 miles. Some others reported the same thing. I brought the car in because I thought something was wrong. I took a ride with the tech and he pinpointed it right away.

I am not sure that the MDS is active from day 1. My wild ass guess is that they may keep it off until all the cylinders get some even wear on them. I hope I am wrong, because I would hate to deal with it again.

Maybe ANC is working.

Isn't there something on the dash indicating MDS active?

On my MY12, the EVIC display can be set to show when the vehicle is operating efficiently ("ECO" shows on the display) and that includes when MDS kicks in. Whether or not MDS is engaged the whole time the display indicates "ECO" isn't clear to me. I do appreciate the feature and how it's provided better fuel economy on my primarily highway driving...I don't really notice any noise or any other indication it's kicking on or off. But I also have a very light foot, too...
