Sun Roof Pop Up Bug Screen ??

I swear, every time I drive this thing, I'm finding out about new stuff I didn't notice before. I noticed this morning when I hit the button to open the Sun Roof, this little black screen thingy pops up about 2 inches on the front edge of the Sun Roof. What's the purpose of this thing? Is it to catch bugs, or cut down wind noise, or what?

Re: Sun Roof Pop Up Bug Screen ??

It's to help reduce wind noise and buffeting.

Got it. Kind of like the speed brakes on the Dauntless SBD.

Use a damp towel and lightly rub it across the front to remove accumulated insects and cottonwood tree etc. seeds.

I also noticed this weekend that the structure around the mesh is different on my friend's '15 from my '14. Either that or it's the difference between my double sunroof and his small sunroof. His mesh bends around to the sides a bit and mine is just one flat sheet across the front.

Very much for wind noise abatement...I know that from experience as it was accidentally not reinstalled after a pano roof maintenance awhile back and opening the top was "unbearable" without the deflector. It got put back on by them immediately once the error was discovered.

Re: Sun Roof Pop Up Bug Screen ??

Is there a maximum speed having the bug shield up before any potential (if any) damage to it? I feel that anything over 40-50 mph causes a lot of force on it, so I switch the sunroof to vent instead like when I'm on the highway.

I may or may not have been doing 90+ with the little deflector up with no problems. '15 Overland with the Pano roof.

You mean it is even worse without the deflector?!

Except at low speed cruise, I find the buffeting of the open sunroof to be excessive--unless you open a couple windows a few inches or more.

It does do a fairly decent job of catching bugs...

Re: Sun Roof Pop Up Bug Screen ??

Big time worse without the deflector...but yes, opening some windows helps just as you have to slightly open a front window if the back window(s) is/are down to avoid a headache.

So.... I paid an extra $1K+ for something I have to roll down a window to use, unless I want to wind up getting a headache. Hell, I should have bought a motorcycle!
