Sunroof Usefullness?

What are the uses and advantages for having a sunroof. I have had a few vehicles with them and have never used them nor found any good use for them.

On a sunny day they let in too much heat. Some manufacturers call them a moon roof because of this.

If you open them for fresh air while driving you hear too much road noise.

If you look up through it while driving you would have a collision.

So why does one choose to ride in a vehicle with a glass pain above their head instead of a metal roof?

With dark interiors it lets light in . It is not so much of a cave . When driving in the mountains or being able to look up ,having the view is one of the many good reasons.
It's been forty years since I've had a vehicle without one. My C6 Corvette convertible was the best sunroof. To each their own.

Re: Sunroof Usefullness?

I love sunroofs. I guess I don't mind the road noise so much. Love to have it open and have the wind blowing thru and sun shining in on a nice day.

In many cases it isn't a choice. In several cars I had to accept a sunroof to get the other options that a trim level provided. When I bought an MDX, even the lowest priced trim level came with a power sunroof.

The term 'Moonroof' was coined by Ford over 40 years ago to differentiate their power glass roof from the pop up or removable metal sunroofs that were popular at the time. It was more for advertising than anything else.

Re: Sunroof Usefullness?

hi there,

In my case...I have it open during winter so the sun heats up the interior, after a day at the office and having the sunroof unconvered when I get in my GC its nice and warm.
In summer I have it closed down if not it gets too warm, only use it at night (in summer).

Basically...if its cloudy I open it so there is more light inside, I wouldnt pay a ton of money for having it...but it came with my GC, I had no option, and all in all I have to admit I like it.
Rgds.

Re: Sunroof Usefullness?

My current vehicle is the 3rd sunroof equipped one I've owned and I love the option.

1. A sunroof does not let in any more heat then a regular roof when closed. Obviously opening it changes that. So does opening a side window.

2. While having a sunroof open while driving does let in more noise (as does having ANY window open), it also creates a far more open, fresh, and less restricting feeling cabin.

3. You can open just the shade to allow more light into the cabin (day or night) which changes the entire feel and atmosphere while driving.

A sunroof gives a driver the OPTION to either keep it closed, at which point it is basically the same as a metal roof; or opening it to let in light and fresh air.

Having OPTIONS is good.

Re: Sunroof Usefullness?

I want one on my next vehicle but ponder the same questions.

Also this past winter if I did have one it would have been some serious damage to it if I had one. I was on the highway and went under a bridge and then heard this enourmous bang and it shifted my Durango into the other lane half way. I literally thought a car exploded next me on the highway or a bomb went off somewhere. I screamed holy shit or wtf and lookin all around trying to see what happened. I look in my side drivers mirror to see wtf is going on and see ice chunks flying all over the road. I then look up in the side mirror up to the bridge and see a plow truck going like 5mph over the bridge plowing.

That was a deafening bang, loudest thing I have ever heard lol. If I had that panoramic sunroof the entire thing would have been totaled and who knows I may be dead as well from ice and glass lodged into my skull

Fully agree with you here. We live in Socal and for most of the year it's sunny and nice out. I enjoy having it open when out for a drive and enjoy the road noise rather than the radio with the same select songs on repeat. My wife on the other hand hates it and prefers to have the windows up and the ac blasting even if it's cool enough to have the windows open. I joke with her by telling her if she hates the sun so much, we should move out of California, but that would never happen.

Re: Sunroof Usefullness?

Our last 2 Jeeps came with a sunroof as part of the packages for each one.

Like someone else, I leave it open in the winter to let sun in (feels nice when it's below zero) or sometimes just when it's cloudy and gloomy.

I don't mind the extra noise below 50 MPH. Cracking the rear windows can reduce the noise when the sunroof is open.

Not that this happens very often, but my rear seat passengers enjoyed the view through the Rocky Mountain National Park and other travels through Colorado last summer.
