Pop the battery out when you put it in the car. It's a piece of cake when you have the metal key out, and you don't need to worry about it being outside of the vehicle, maybe still having signal, etc.

Have you discovered any workarounds?

Actualy I do this when I go out windsurfing.

You have to lock the car, then open only the drivers door (by grabing the handle, you need to configure the car to unlock only the drivers door). Place the fob inside the cabin, anywhere you want.... close the door and then use the metal key to lock the drivers door. Thats it, you got the fob locked inside the car, you can go surfing and afterwards you can use the metal key to unlock the drivers door.

That is a super handy feature on Fords. I loved it on my Explorer, I could lock the keys in the center console and go to the beach and never have to care. They keypad is also useful for chronic keys-locked-in-car people.

Not really I have a friend that can put fingers on all of the buttons and tap each one very fast and it will unlock. He has tried this on my Fords and it works on all of them. Not a great feature in my opinion.

Apparently Ford does not have logic built in so if the wrong code is entered you have to start over. Once the right combo has been reached it unlocks no matter the number of incorrect tries.

Re: surfing with the valet key?

^I have not tried this, but it would take a while to get the correct combination. If someone wants in that bad, they'll just smash a window anyway. It's still quite useful while swimming at pool or lake.

Re: surfing with the valet key?

Actually know he can do it in less than 10 seconds. Most of them in 5 seconds. It would really help if the combo was more than 4 digits. I'll have to take a video of him next time doing this.

I got the hitch vault for my two suvs.

Works great. Well worth the money. Perfect for beach, hunting, picnics, or backup key.

Re: surfing with the valet key?

The HitchSafe has the advantage that it blocks the fob's signal once it is locked inside. The truck doesn't know it's there, so it's pretty secure. We use it while diving.

Re: surfing with the valet key?

I've tried the - put the keyless fob in the jeep - lock the dirver's door with the key - three beeps and doors unlock. On the third trial, it will stay locked. Great, but as soon as I use the key to unlock the door - BEEP BEEP BEEP off goes the alarm.

This won't do as I need to keep the key dry when I SCUBA dive and sometimes at night near where people are living (I wouldn't want to hear the alarm late at night.) If I'm drysuit diving, I've kept the fob inside the suit - dry, but not going to work in a wetsuit.

Taking the battery out - haven't done this as sometimes I do 3 - 4 dives and taking the battery out - locking, unlock, battery in, repeat, repeat... would be a bit of a pain. Plus, does taking the battery out for any length of time require a reset or will the fob always work properly when the battery is re-installed.

Tried wrapping the fob in tin foil - doesn't block the signal.

The hitch lock looks a bit small for the fob and sometimes I have a trailer.

Thinking of welding a metal sleeve (box with holes for the locking pin to go through)to go into the receiver. But can't use the trailer.

I've left it in a buddy's car but sometimes I dive solo.

I can keep it in a small drybox (taking it with me), but those things can and will eventually leak.

Seeing a hanging lockbox seems too inviting for someone to try and open it up.

My 2 cents....

The only way I found to make this work is to lock the car as you would do normally (whith the button on the door handle, or with the fob), then open just the drivers door by grabing the handle o with the fob.... after doing this when you place the fob inside the cabin and lock the drivers door with the metal key, the car stays locked and it won´t unlock if you grab the door handle with the fob inside... and no alarm going off when unlocking the door with the metal key... at least it works for me. If I lock the car using the door buttons or the fob with a door open, then this won´t work....

Re: surfing with the valet key?

When I hike at state parks, go to the beach, wedding...anywhere I don't want to lose or keep the fob on me....I lock the truck with the fob and hide it far enough away to avoid transmission. Works everytime. Even if someone finds it they always turn it in to park services or lost and found. I wouldn't advise this while consuming (enter fav. beverage here)

Actually I have never done this but I think I would give it a shot.
