Re: surfing with the valet key?

Here's what works for me - Surfing, Kiteboarding, Water Sports with a Valet Key - locking the FOB in the Jeep without setting off alarm...
.
So I just got my new 2015 GC SRT and one of the tests before buying was this exact issue. I NEED to lock the FOB in the Jeep. Waterproof bags suck. So here's the magic trick that worked for me:
1. Set the remote to open ONLY the driver door on first push.
2. Make a duplicate Valet Key for putting in wetsuit or hang it around neck.
3. Suit up - shut hatch - go to driver door - use FOB to lock all doors (including hatch)
4. Unlock driver door with FOB - this is important as it disarms the alarm.
5. Wrap FOB with aluminum foil (3-4 layers) and place in an Altoids metal can.
6. Stash can next to seat on the floor.
7. Close driver door and lock with Valet Key
8. All doors are now locked BUT the alarm system is NOT on.
9. When you return, the valet key will unlock the driver door without setting off alarm!

The lights and instruments will flash or stay on for 15+ seconds when locking, but I have tested this 50 ways and all failed except the sequence shown above. The aluminum foil apparently shields the RF enough that the system cannot detect it. I use the altoid can for cosmetics - and to keep the crunched up foil in a tidy space. It's not ghetto and it frikking works every time.

Hope that helps!

Really, you're just describing building a Faraday cage for the fob. Because the fob is operating at 433 MHz or lower then anything that blocks RFID or a cell signal should work just fine.

Since you mentioned the cosmetic aspect, I'm guessing something like this or this would work. Using the signal-blocking principles of the Faraday cage to solve this problem is a sound application of physics, but YMMV in terms of whether the manufacturers actually deliver a functionally constructed product. I saw reviews for other products that indicated that some RFID blocking pouches/wallets/purses... don't (e.g. Pacsafe).

ETA: Haha, I guess so.
