surfing with the valet key?

hey guys, has anyone ever tried to take the removable metal key out of the keyless entry fob - then tried to leave the fob in the cabin of the vehicle? the reason i ask, is that i need to lock up the truck while surfing. unfortunately, the vehicle is too damn stubborn to let me lock the doors while the key fob is still in the cabin. Have you discovered any workarounds?

Re: surfing with the valet key?

It's in the owner's manual:

Preventing Inadvertent Locking Of Passive Entry RKE Transmitter In Vehicle

If one of the vehicle doors is open and the door panel switch is used to lock the vehicle, once all open doors have been closed, the vehicle checks the inside and outside of the vehicle for any valid Passive Entry RKE transmitters. If one of the vehicle’s Passive Entry RKE transmitters is detected inside the vehicle, and no other valid Passive Entry RKE transmitters is detected outside the vehicle, the Passive Entry System automatically unlocks all vehicle doors and chirps the horn three times (on the third attempt ALL doors will lock and the Passive Entry RKE transmitter can be locked in the vehicle).

Re: surfing with the valet key?

If you leave the fob in the car, someone can just pull on your handle and open the door. I use one of these and lock it to the tow hitch. It's thick enough to block the fob signal and I don't have to worry about loosing anything in the ocean when I'm surfing.

Re: surfing with the valet key?

Will the key box from Home Depot fit inside the receiver tube?

Re: surfing with the valet key?

And now for the ghetto/obvious way to do it...

Pop the battery out when you put it in the car. It's a piece of cake when you have the metal key out, and you don't need to worry about it being outside of the vehicle, maybe still having signal, etc.

No, it won't fit inside. I lock mine to the metal loop in either side of the receiver tube.

Re: surfing with the valet key?

I put mine in the Mylar bag that came with my ezpass tag, that they give you to keep the tag in when you don't want to use it to pay tolls.

That is not true, it is possible no matter what the manual says to lock the key in the car. Once you do that, you can not unlock or pull on the door handle to open the car. (It has been discussed on here before)

In short yes you can use the valet to lock your car while surfing. Heck you can even keep the regular key fob with you while in the water. They are water tight, but for how long no one knows.

Re: surfing with the valet key?

This is where external keypads (on Fords) come in real handy. That's the only time I've used the one on my Fords: when we go to the pool or lake.

And YES -- you can lock your keys in the Jeep. My wife found the only way/combination of doing this, and I retested at home. She opened passenger door, put keys/purse/bags in, and must have hit the little black (lock) button on the exterior door handle before closing it. This was the only way to do it. I tried hitting the lock button on interior door, and it would beep/unlock when door closed. Hit the lock button on FOB, and it did the same.

Re: surfing with the valet key?

You can also try and place the fob in the back of the Jeep, back seat or cargo area and then you can lock the doors while the fob is inside. Some folks on here have done it by mistake. Example, someone had tossed their fob in a gym bag and placed it in the trunk not realizing the fob was still inside the bag, closed the hatch and they were then locked out. So it is possible to lock the fob inside.

Re: surfing with the valet key?

^ I can see that, because the hatch button only opens/unlocks the hatch.
