Agreed, it goes without saying that no matter what cookery you use it must meet your specific Chrysler spec. Several dont in 5/20 synthetic for the hemi.

Indeed. For the Hemi, Amsoil does
I've beat the $h!T out of motorcycle engines. Used different oils and had them tested. Amsoil has by far beat out Motul and even Repsol. Even if they were not a sponsor I would still use it. It's not like it is any more expensive than the Penzoil that the dealer uses.

Re: Synthetic oil?

I'm not going to put my opinion one way or the other here I'm just going to put a PSA out there.

If you use synthetic and have a membership to Sams or Costco you can usually pick up 6 quarts at one or the other Mobil 1 for $25.

Re: Synthetic oil?

chwoner, that's how I purchased my case of Mobil 1 for top-offs...$26 at Costco. (Hemi engine will use a quart by about half-way through the 8K mile change interval...nature of the engine)

Just be aware that Mobil 1 does not currently meet the Hemi spec for warranty, MS-6395 I think. I know they were working on it and there wasn't much concern about failure or changes to make it pass.

That whole thing is a joke. I have little faith in Chrysler doing the right thing concerning any oil issues anyways.

I had a Wrangler with a 3.8 that burnt oil from day one and I gave up on them every doing anything. It's a miracle I bought this Jeep and after my experiences with this one even though I love them I am done.

I hear ya just wanted to b sure the technicality was out there given the topic. Mobil 1 is grt stuff and I would use it if I weren't a brainwashed (its all true tho) Amsoil snob.

I like Mobile 1, but unfortunately it has not had the Chrysler Certification, I don't understand why.

I don't want warranty issues, especially on such a young motor design (V3.6).
And especially since Chrysler doesn't seem like a big fan of synthetics.

So for that reason I use Castrol Syntec (I forget which one). It used to say Chrysler Spec on the bottle but they needed to make room for other specs I guess and removed it. But the Web Site lists it as meeting the spec. And it's the exact same Skew number for bottles with and without it listed.

I just noticed someone posted similar regarding hemi. I don't think it's certified for the 3.6L V6 either and I think it's the same spec.

Re: Synthetic oil?

By the way this is a cool site for comparing oil specifications.

https://www.lubrizol.com/apps/relperftool/pc.html

Unfortunately Chrysler isn't listed. If you really want to see if one oil is better than another you can compare it's specs to another oil with different specs.

Its like a $10k pain in the a$$ to meet it so its a volume/bandwidth thing. Chrysler and manufacturers do not dislike synthetic per se. Its spec for the SRT motors just like many other brands' hipo motors. They just don't want to raise the cost of ownership by designing to that spec if they don't have to. Makes sense actually. Remember the manufacturer has to prove you violated a spec or use, not the other way around.

$10K is pennies to a company like Mobile.
There is some sort of politics going on.
Don't care if a manufacturer has to prove it or not, I feel like it will be less of an issue if I use an oil that meets spec. Remember, you'll have to deal with a lot of idiots on issues like that. And if some idiot sees it's unapproved then it will be more crap to deal with.

Since there are good oils, very easy to get, that meet spec, for a reasonable price, why use something else.

And there are differences in specs (not necessarily one better than another, but differences).

Castrol makes terrific oils too. And I guess they decided to pay the $10K.

Re: Synthetic oil?

Another thread on oil... (grin)

My understanding is:

Synthetic:
high temps, cold weather starts, heavy acceleration, may keep engine cleaner, long distances between oil changes - about 10,000 to 15,000 miles

Conventional Oil:
normal driving, normal distances between oil changes - about 5,000 to 7,500 miles.

Jeep (Based on the Owners manual):

- You can use either type of oil but it must meet Chrysler standards MS-6395

- You can rely on the oil % meter on the dash for scheduling oil changes

- Oil change intervals must not exceed every 12 months [fixed this, I originally had 6 months] or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Personally, I am using Pennzoil ultra full synthetic and am changing oil every 6 months, ~ 8,000 to 9,000 miles.

I'm using synthetic because of driving conditions and the weather where I live. I live in the Boston area, where I can be sitting in stopped traffic on a hot day in July (90 to 100 degrees) and where we get below freezing for much of the winter (cold starts).

I've been sending my oil to Blackstone Labs for analysis. The last oil change was at 8600 miles and they said that the oil additives are holding up and I can go further if I want to.
