Synthetic oil?

Brought the Jeep in for an oil change (I have 2 years or 4 oil changes free of charge, conventional oil) The dealer suggested that after that time I should use synthetic oil only. Why would they suggest using synthetic when the jeep uses conventional oil? When I asked the service rep that question he told me synthetic will keep the engine cleaner. In the manual it doesn't even mention using synthetic. Can someone tell me the advantages (if any) by switching to synthetic oil. I have 9000 miles on the Jeep and change my oil every 4500 miles.

What are my fellow jeep owners using?
Thanks

Re: Synthetic oil?

The biggest advantage is more money in the dealers pocket. If you have your oil changed every 4500 miles, and you don't use your vehicle as a taxi, or do a lot of heavy towing, there's no real need for synthetic oil. There are those of us here who are synthetic junkies, but for normal usage, and frequent changes, the advantage is negligible. My advice is to go by the oil life monitor built into the Jeep.

Re: Synthetic oil?

Somewhere in the manual, at least in one of the 8 versions, it does mention synthetic. It say that you may use it ... but still use the change interval indicated by the EVIC. Nowhere that I could find did it say you should use it, or even mention that there would be an advantage.

I remember reading an article where the CEO or President of one of the top brands of synthetic oil was asked what is driving the increased sales. The answer was "aggressive advertising".

I believe that everything and everybody who lives or lived on this earth were put here for a reason. The dinosaurs died so many years ago to give us oil today. I refuse let their lives and deaths be in vain.

Re: Synthetic oil?

Funny how the dealer isn't mentioning the use of synthetic during your free oil change period.

LOL... Gee, I wonder why?

Re: Synthetic oil?

The main advantage IMO of running a synthetic, is that I can get by with only changing the oil once a year, instead of multiple times. I always change my own oil, so if you're having a dealer or someone else do it, and you don't mind changing it out every 4-5k miles, I'm sure conventional will be fine for you.

FWIW, I run Amsoil full synthetic and change at ~12-15k. Cost is ~$60/year.

Thanks, I couldn't remember the name. It was Amsoil that said it was aggressive advertising that accounted for increased sales.

Per Jeep (and I know Acura when I had a MY11) states that you should not extend the oil change interval when using synthetic. Modern vehicles, unless the evic says sooner, mostly call for 1 year or 10 - 12,000 interval, not 4 - 5,000.

But, as others have said, using syth or doing more frequent oil changes makes them feel better. You chose the option that makes you feel better ... so all is good!

Re: Synthetic oil?

I'm a huge believer in full synthetic oil. It can increase hp and torque by reducing friction and I don't have to worry about extreme cold in the winter or heat in the summer. I drive my v6 like I stole it (redline consistently) with no guilt whatsoever.

With full synthetic and quality oil filters I see no problem with 10-12k oil changes (or once a year). Time not spent changing the oil is time well saved.

Had ZERO engine issues over two decades doing this with 4 banger imports that I absolutely flogged every drive.

I have a family member who works for an oil company who swears by full synthetic as well based on lab testing. (Mobil 1)

On a related note, I was pissed at my dealer who offered a "free" first oil change that ended up being $50 with full synthetic. So disgustingly cheap that I don't use the dealer for any maintenance that is not free (warranty or recall).

Full synthetic isn't cheap, but damn---I just bought a 43k vehicle and you can't offer an oil discount on the first fscking oil change? Seriously?

Anyways, my 2 cents.

Re: Synthetic oil?

I was told (by a very reputable and trusted mechanic) to switch to synthetic because I use my Wrangler infrequently as a second car. I only drive it with no top, so am limited to nice days in New England and sometimes it sits for 2-3 months at a time. Never had problems

Re: Synthetic oil?

I use full synthetic and have for a long time. But I also don't change my oil at frequent intervals. For my MY12 JGC, it's every 8000 miles which is what the manufacturer recommends for oil changes. I've had dealers try to insist on shorter intervals and after the second attempt after my first warning, they never saw us again for any routine service.

I would go full synthetic now and negotiate from the 4 conventional to 2 synthetic and call it a day

I agree if you change it that often, it's not worth it.

I use it because I like running oil longer and I would not trust conventional oil for longer intervals. I change at 7500 mile intervals and sometimes I get busy and might go 8500-9000 without much worry. In fact on some cars I think I forgot to change it once in a while and went 15,000 miles, oops. With no issue what so ever.

It's less time whether I do it myself or have it done to run longer intervals. And I think synthetic will protect it as good or better on long intervals. In the end time is $$$ and I think it's cheaper to go with synthetic with longer intervals.

I run my cars to over 200K miles and have done it this way on the last 6 Vehicles or so (3 Jeeps and 3 VW's).
