Synthetic Oil for 5.7L Hemi

I was wondering what would be the best synthetic oil for my 5.7L Hemi engine.
Our temperatures here are mostly between 15C-46C (59F-115), throughout the year. It is highly unlikely and almost impossible that we go below 8C (46.4F).

A friend of mine who is a mechanic says that 0W-40 synthetic will flow the same as 5w-40 synthetic in our climate.

If true then what would be the best synthetic oil to use?

I'm mostly thinking about Mobil1 or Royal Purple.

Our dealer here uses Penzoil 5W-40 full synthetic, as they say it is recommeded by Mopar

Re: Synthetic Oil for 5.7L Hemi

Do not use 0/5W-40 in the 5.7! That oil weight will mess with the MDS. Stick with 5W-20 or 0W-20.

our dealer here is using 5W-40 full synthetic from penzoil. Is that not safe

Re: Synthetic Oil for 5.7L Hemi

It's safe, but the MDS (the system that deactivates 4 cylinders on the 5.7L) is designed with 0 or 5W-20 oil.

Quote:
Vehicles with 5.7L engines equipped with Multiple Displacement System (MDS) must use SAE 5W-20 oil. Failure to do so may result in improper operation of the Multiple Displacement System (MDS).

Then how about using mobil1 5w-20 fully synthetic?

That would work just fine, just like any other 5W-20 synthetic oil

Re: Synthetic Oil for 5.7L Hemi

The independent shop that does my oil changes uses Kendal synthetic. The dealer uses Mobil 1. I honestly don't think there is all that much difference at this point between brand-name products, at least for the average person's purposes. If you change your own, Costco and other places have Mobil 1 for pretty darn cheap...

It's really funny how so many dealers say a particular oil is recommended for the JGC. I could not find a single brand of oil that was recommended in my OM. Only thing I could find was that 5W20 must be used in a 5.7 for the mds to operate properly. I'm sure if you had a warranty related issue dealing with oil, Chrysler would probably say it's not covered by the warranty.

It also indicates that the oil should meet MS-6395. Seeing that my engine is still under warranty, I use the Penzoil Platinum.
Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic | Pennzoil 10 Minute Oil Change
There are often oil change specials at my local parts store and it works out to be about $6/ quart.

If the oil they use meets ms6395 spec and is 5w20, it is recommended by Chrysler, no matter what the brand. They are not lying, just not telling the whole story.

Re: Synthetic Oil for 5.7L Hemi

Do you guys recommend always using synthetic oil? Was told long time ago it's best thing for long engine life. I did use in my Frontier and never had engine issue in 170k miles.

I've always used synthetic in my vehicles. Upon my first oil change in my WK2, I switched to Amsoil Synthetic. I've always gone Mobil 1, but I don't mind spending a little extra for a higher quality of synthetic in a $45,000 vehicle
