Taking care of the exterior

I have a brand new Jeep and I want to take good care of her.

Here is what I used to do with my old car
  • Wash with RainX
  • RainX on the windscreen
  • Tire-wet
  • Vacuum interior

With this one, I feel like I want to do much-much more.

What do you guys to to keep the Jeep shiny?

Re: Taking care of the exterior

I got some exterior coating applied on mine for free when I bought it and haven't waxed it yet (water still beads up so I guess that's good enough right?). I get the chunks of mud off with a pressure washer after I run it through the mud but other than that, the rail will wash it for me. I do sweep out the interior every now and then, old french fries from my kids start to smell funny after a while.

Re: Taking care of the exterior

This is what I do,
For the interior I use a simple leather cleaner from the Auto store, nothing special. For the exterior I use a product called Duragloss. First I use their #901 car wash concentrate to give it a good cleaning, then I use their #601 bonding agent, this is applied and left on, then I apply their #105 polish/wax and finally I use their #111 for a wet looking shine. I usually do this process twice a year, and in between this I use their #951 spray on wax after each wash, about once a month.

All day Sunday Cleaning

Re: Taking care of the exterior

When you say "Wash with RainX", I hope thats some sort of carwash soap made by Rain X and not just Rain X

These dealer "exterior coatings" are simply a coat of paint sealant, nothing dramatic, and water beading doesn't necessarily mean theres any protection left on it.

Check out www.autopia.org as well as the DetailedImage site someone else posted. Theres way more to doing it properly than can be conveyed in one thread.

Re: Taking care of the exterior

Keeping it garaged is the most important thing IMO. I had a garage kept '02 sebring convertible that I only had detailed twice and I waxed myself maybe three times in ten years and it still shined like brand new (128,000 miles) when I traded it in on my '11 JGC. The top still looked brand new too. Another plus is that it's safe from thieves and the neighborhood vandals, I mean kids.

Re: Taking care of the exterior

Keeping it garaged makes a big difference, but even if you can't if you detail it regularly and wash it regularly (I personally wash both cars once a week) you can keep them nice even if they sit outside.

I love the Poorboys EX-P sealant. You can do the whole car at once and its not impacted by sunlight or moisture when applying. Looks great after a clay bar and lasts a long time.

How long if at all are you waiting to wax a new vehicle?

Re: Taking care of the exterior

I waited one day. The dealer didn't polish it at all and the roof had splash spots all over it. Sloppy wash job. Years ago you were cautioned to wait several months before applying polish to a new finish. Today's paints are not affected by the current polishes and waxes.
