Cool Tesla Model X SUV --- tempting?

Hmmmmmm......love my Grand Cherokee (all six throughout the years ... continuously owned one since they first came out)............but I gotta admit, the Tesla Model X SUV is diverting my attention and giving me a wondering eye. No doubt I will test drive one once they come out.

I can go 500 miles + on one tank in the GC and be back on the road in 10 mins.

Re: Tesla Model X SUV --- tempting?

Tesla makes very nice sedans.

Tesla however seems to forget that many parts of the world, despite recent global warming concerns, have something called "snow" during many months of the year.

The reason I point this out is because there's some silly romantic idea about "Falcon Wing" rear doors that seems to have taken hold of the Tesla X. Every time you open the rear doors, be ready for snow or rain to fall inside, assuming the motors can even lift the heavy load of wet snow on the roof-hinged doors.

I'll take a pass on it, thanks.

^^^ Not a big fan of the wing rear doors but I suppose it is to make easy access to the third row of seats. At least the front doors open normally so the back wing doors only when needed isn't too big of an issue, at least for me. Need to see it in person for sure.

Re: Tesla Model X SUV --- tempting?

Its an awesome idea and I'm sure if anyone can pull off an electric SUV, its Tesla. However this seems more like a local SUV. Designed for the moms who need a large SUV for their one child or the Dad who commutes to the office and back but likes the feeling of being higher than everyone else on the road.

For long commutes, no one is going to want to have to map out their route before hand so they can stop at a quick charge station. Love the electric vehicle concept and even implementation, but until the long range capabilities are perfected these vehicles are going to be used for mainly suburbanites

I read a story in Car & Driver (I think) for a trip from Ann Arbor, MI to VA (I think). The trip was planned using the Tesla navigation system which has the charging stations programmed in. The trip didn't seem to go super well, with lots of rerouting issues, unnecessary stops, etc.

I like the idea of an electric vehicle but it isn't there for me yet.

Here it is:

Will be long range, affordable, full of tech. Should give Tesla a run and start making the EV market more competitive. Competition spurs innovation (and lower costs).

Sorry but you're a lifetime member, that means you're legally obligated to stay with the brand for life. It's in the lifetime member handbook somewhere. You can trust me, I would never lie to a lifer about something so important.

I give it 1 year until the redesign of those doors. Or maybe they kill the model altogether. Can you imagine the overhead and side clearance one needs for these doors in the typical garage ? OK, maybe a millionaire's garage is a bit bigger than the regular garage but then again, taking the car down town to see opera, and parking in an multi-story garage...is just a nightmare waiting to happen.

Not to mention concerns about kids opening those doors. At any rate, I can't wait to see it fail in winter weather :-)

Looks like a Ford Focus hatchback. Probably costs 5-6 times as much...
