I'm familiar with the Ecoboost. In the SHO it does indeed prefer premium fuel. While you can run regular through it without a problem, it will de-tune itself to prevent preignition (a pretty standard capability now in vehicles that recommend 91+ octane ratings; they'll dial back the timing to save the engine). That means you're not getting full power. And if you bought the vehicle with that engine for the power, why wouldn't you feed it what it needs for that capability?

If you aren't going to feed it premium, you're leaving power on the table, negating the full capability of the engine. May as well have bought something else.

Running it with 87 still would give an 5.7L Charger and maybe a 6.1L also, a run for its money. I believe that you lose a messily 2 HP by running it with out premium.... something that I'm sure most can live without.

Not true. There has been no word what-so-ever about the V6 Eccoboost making it into the new Explorer. Only the new 4 cyclinder 200HP Eccoboost engine is slated for the Explorer at this time.

Re: test drive v6

Who cares if the ecoboost V6 does make it into the exploder. V8's sound so much better and have so much more power waiting to be released than a already ragged out V6 boosted to the max.

Actually, there is talk about the V6 Eccoboost being worked on for 2012 and brought up above 400HP. That's pretty sick for a V6, just saying.

I've yet to see any dyno tests showing the difference; I imagine it would be more than 2HP; probably something more on the order of a percentage. The closest I've seen was some years ago when a car magazine tested several vehicles that specified premium; the difference was anywhere from not that noticeable to a significant percentage (10% or more) of the total.

If it's that big a problem for you, don't buy the V-6. Go get the Hemi. Or wait for the SRT. Or just go get a drag racer and be done with it. Expecting high fuel economy with tremendous power and acceleration out of a vehicle like this is just foolishness. Given what the competition has accomplished, Jeep has not done badly at all.

I didn't understand Ford's stupid move in that regards. The new Explorer is a huge and heavy SUV. The company already has a fully developed V6 EcoBoost ready and what do they put into it? This crappy I4. Oh, yes, with the I4, you can neither have AWD nor the trailer tow package...
