I don't know if they were gunning for MTBF or what, but it was implied that it was for the powertrain.

Oh, I'd be quite surprised if there was any difference noticeable to the driver when running regular instead of premium in a modern vehicle. I'd be sure that there would be a power loss, but it would have to be a SERIOUS loss (at least 25%, and you'd have to be hammering it even then to notice) for the driver to be able to tell any change on the butt dyno. Most people just don't really ever wring out every last amount of power from the engine; we're usually just using a small fraction, and unless it negatively affects throttle tip in and initial response, we just won't be able to tell when we lose 0.5 seconds to 60mph.
