Re: The Dalai Lama Drives a WK2

As someone who has owned three fully armored vehicles, it is my opinion that these vehicles are NOT armored. The photo does not indicate ballistic glass / transparent armor. I have been around and driven/ridden in armored vehicles, including limos and SUV's for the President and Vice President of the United States...including riding in the armored limo in the motorcade. By the way, (Republican ONLY) POTUS and VPOTUS motorcades are cool...

Re: The Dalai Lama Drives a WK2

Yea, the POTUS has what level VII or something crazy like that. Most military and contractor armor kits are IV, maybe a level lower or higher.

This armored kit is just for the lay person who can "cough" afford it.

Recently there was an armored Porsche Cheyenne on Sons of Guns on discover and you get to see some of the type of armor put into these vehicles. It will stop most small arms, which is the biggest concern for most of the people that need it, and not weight the vehicle down so much it still can't get the hell out of dodge.

Anything that is stopping an RPG, anti-armor/anti-tank weapons, or IED is military grade or higher and cost a ton.

Re: The Dalai Lama Drives a WK2

The Grands shown do look stock but are probably light armored for small arms and perhaps basic fragmentation protection. The secret squirrel alphabet agencies have vehicles with varying protection depending on mission-duty requirements. Yeah gaidin43 you're right about weight vs get-out-of-dodge capabilities. I've only been in one armored vehicle, a Suburban in the mid 1990s, not sure what "level" it rated at but was told it could survive a grenade and .50 cal attack and it was a smooth ride with all that extra weight. It looked quite stock from the outside unless you know where/what to look for.

Re: The Dalai Lama Drives a WK2

I saw an episode of Burn Notice where they armored a ricer car using plexiglass and telephone books so I assume that's the same thing they do for the POTUS.

.50 cal is most likely level IV. The suburbans you see driving around dc you can always figure them out by a quick look at the springs. The rest is very hard to notice.

Re: The Dalai Lama Drives a WK2

Any armoring job worth anything will have the opaque armoring overlap the transparent armor. As such, there will be an inside border around the glass to account for the overlap. These vehicles don't show any such border. The USSS protects foreign dignitaries and wouldn't bother with a worthless Level II or below.

One key factor for armored vehicles is to blend in with the traffic, hence great pains are made to make the vehicle look stock. Upgraded springs, borders around the glass, tires/wheels, ride height....and sometimes glass color are signs of armoring.

You need to read the sales brochures more carefully...
