Re: Thinking of buying a 2012/13. Am I crazy?

I went to a couple of dealers yesterday. One offered me a 2012 limited, essentially loaded for 15% off MSRP. But it had 1100 miles on it and they call it "new" because it was not titled...

The other offered me a 2013, decently specced out, for 13% off MSRP.

That deal isn't nearly good enough for me. Thoughts?

Forget all the figuring percentages. Decide what you are willing to pay in dollars and make an offer. You're buying a vehicle, not competing in a math contest.

We can't tell you what is a good deal or a great deal, you have to decide what is a good deal for you. Find out what Invoice is on the vehicles and see where the numbers they gave you land. If it is over invoice, not goo deal. If under invoice by 2%, that's going in the good deal area.

Re: Thinking of buying a 2012/13. Am I crazy?

I think I've digested all the info out there about the 2014's and I am more determined than before to "settle" on a 2013 or 2012. I'm sure an even better deal can be secured now and the stripping of the Limited of things like the pano roof is a real turn off. I think I can score a really nice deal on a Limited V8 with luxury group. Thoughts?

Figure out what is invoice and try to get 2-5% off of that since they are older models now. Plus with the V8, you should be able to Get the $1500 off for that as well.

Re: Thinking of buying a 2012/13. Am I crazy?

The new UCONNECT is state of the art. Nobody has anything close to what Chrysler has. Recently they won award at CES. Other reason for getting MY2014 is 8speed tranny which not only bumps MPGs but also will help with performance especially for V6.

MY2014 will be VERY long model year. You can buy it now and 2 years from now it will still be BRAND NEW as around that time you will see MY2015 models showing on dealer's lots.

All that being said with Access Fund or Thread Lightly you can get easily 1% below invoice which is about 6-7% below MSRP for MY2014. With all the rebates that are going on (1500 for V8) you should be able to double that (14% under MSRP) w/o breaking a sweat for 2012-2013 models. Actually I would expect to get more. Remember you will take huge depreciation hit. At this point cat is out of the bag and dealers will try to get rid of the old inventory AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Also remember you might not get what you want as well ... you get what they have on the lot. If they have MOPAR Chrome group and you don't give a damn about bling, bling than you are still paying for it. Try to negotiate this stuff out and get additional $$$ off.

I'm shooting for at least 16% off MSRP. I'm in no rush.

I wouldn't expect a huge depreciation hit with the new models being out. Based on this forum, other forums, and other people with no bias, it's split about half and half people who like the 14 and people who hate it.

I agree that a lot of people prefer the looks of the older version (and I'm that person) but ... there is A LOT of people who want to have the LATEST no matter if it makes sense or not... Take a look at the new Pathfinder. It is a piece of s$#%$ minivan in disguise of an SUV, nevertheless old pathfinders are heavily discounted.

Big player for me in MY2014 is the new UCONNECT system and once that hits EVERYBODY will want to have similar system in their car. Probably, if not for that I would most likely be looking at leftover 2013 Overland with Saddle interior (as I like Saddle color which I cannot get on 2014 and I prefer the old exterior better). Like I mentioned another thing is 8speed BUT ... maybe it makes sense to get the old bulletproof tranny (although with performance deficiencies). New 8 speed is new (at least for Jeep) and Jeep is no BMW so there will be issues.

I usually keep cars for a long time so I don't care about depreciation. Still at the end of the day if I'm going to spend 40K+ my biggest criteria is: I WANT TO BE HAPPY and HAVE NO REGRETS.

Is is way more than just a facelift and if you are going to spend all that money and regret that you didn't go with the new one ... think twice!!! On the other hand is somebody is looking at Laredo which will not get the new UCONNECT anyway and with V8 which was fine with 6 speed than why bother with the new model?

Re: Thinking of buying a 2012/13. Am I crazy?

I am thinking I want to see how things settle out for the CRD prices. I love driving a diesel and I'm ok paying a premium to do it. It's not about the money saved in fewer fill ups, it's about conserving resources. When it makes sense to do so.
