I agree that a lot of people prefer the looks of the older version (and I'm that person) but ... there is A LOT of people who want to have the LATEST no matter if it makes sense or not... Take a look at the new Pathfinder. It is a piece of s$#%$ minivan in disguise of an SUV, nevertheless old pathfinders are heavily discounted.
Big player for me in MY2014 is the new UCONNECT system and once that hits EVERYBODY will want to have similar system in their car. Probably, if not for that I would most likely be looking at leftover 2013 Overland with Saddle interior (as I like Saddle color which I cannot get on 2014 and I prefer the old exterior better). Like I mentioned another thing is 8speed BUT ... maybe it makes sense to get the old bulletproof tranny (although with performance deficiencies). New 8 speed is new (at least for Jeep) and Jeep is no BMW so there will be issues.
I usually keep cars for a long time so I don't care about depreciation. Still at the end of the day if I'm going to spend 40K+ my biggest criteria is: I WANT TO BE HAPPY and HAVE NO REGRETS.
Is is way more than just a facelift and if you are going to spend all that money and regret that you didn't go with the new one ... think twice!!! On the other hand is somebody is looking at Laredo which will not get the new UCONNECT anyway and with V8 which was fine with 6 speed than why bother with the new model?
