Thinking of dropping my Jeep

With all the TSB, recalls, and issues it has started to get to me. I have never had a vehicle in the shop so much as this thing. Now granted that each time I've had it in the shop it has only stayed in overnight 1 time, but still things aren't right. Transmission still isn't shifting like butter and the radio is really starting to act up (it was bad when I first got it with firmware 13.05). So my thoughts are possibly trading it in on a new GMC Sierra 1500 Double Cab and get it out to basically what my jeep is now. Gas mileage is roughly the same and I don't want the navigation in the new vehicle (I already have a Garmin with lifetime updates). Has anyone else thought of getting rid of their 2014? I know quite a few have already.

I leased my 2014 Summit, and believe me I cannot wait to bring it back. Nothing but problems over here as well.

Re: Thinking of dropping my Jeep

Love mine, but only have had one problem with the diesel cat and one recall for a flash. Both so far solved with a single trip to the dealer, though the cat will likely require another trip down the road. Hard to find this combination of luxury and off road capability. I'm planning to keep mine for a long time. Absolutely love it.

I bought the lifetime warranty about 6 months into owning mine as I thought I would want to keep it as long as possible. Now obviously things have changed. It is hard to find what I have for features for the same point but when do problems start to outweight the features? I was one of the biggest 2014 supporters (on JeepGarage forums that is) but with these issues, it has let me down. People who ride with me wonder if there is something wrong with the transmission shifts when they feel it. Its hard to tell them that it is "Normal" when I feel the same way or when we go on vacation and the GPS acts up and can't be used. The price we pay for vehicles now a days we should be expecting more and Jeep just hasn't kept me happy enough. I knew I was a beta tester when I got my 2014 and I was ok with that but I didn't think it would get to me after long. I told my wife I was thinking of getting rid of it and she always told me she would rip off my "nuts" if I did because for almost 2yrs before the 2014 came out, it was everything I talked about it. Almost 24/7 I was on this site, talking or answering questions to help others or on vacation in LV I was fielding calls from dealerships on getting 6% under invoice to help others out. That was a HUGE amount of time I spent on this thing and I have gotten to a point I'm ready to move on but it is hard for me to justify the move...Too many things to think about again.

Join the club SnoFire...

I'm currently in "Lemon Law" limbo...my attorney awaiting a response from Chrysler/Jeep. Can't wait until I get rid of this POS. Between the two 2014 GCs I've owned over the last two years, I've NEVER been to the dealership as much for repairs when owning these two sorry excuses for vehicles. Got my eyes on a 2015 Mercedes Benz C300 Sport 4matic.

When it's finally gone, here are the major things I won't miss about owning both my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokees:

1) Poor shifting V6 transmission - Hesitation, rough downshifts

2) The constant TSBs & recalls - If it wasn't some module reflash, it was a reflash for the radio or some other issue. I should have know it as a bad omen after getting a CEL while driving my first GC off the dealerships lot when new

3) Crappy paint job - Thinly applied paint at plant, softball size "defects" in paint on doors & hood

4) Front end vibrations above 70 mph - Tires rebalanced & rotated...no effect.

5) Poor service at Jeep dealerships - Worst experiences I've ever had at any auto dealership EVER...15 years behind the times or more in customer service. No loners given unless you purchase an extended warrany.

Re: Thinking of dropping my Jeep

Sno,

I know exactly how you feel. I joined here in September 2012 in anticipation of Jeep's next great thing. It is an impressive design with a few too many bugs. Mine never stayed overnight, but if I had to pay for every cup of coffee I drank at the dealership I'd be broke today.

As you know, I bailed about 6 months ago. I don't miss the multiple visits to the service department.

I do intend to give Jeep one more try. My only other Jeep was an '07 Liberty. In almost 4 years (replaced by an '11 MDX) it is the only vehicle I ever owned that "never" went in for service other than oil changes. So for me, Jeep is batting 500. By this time next year I should know if I made another mistake. I might wait this time until some hit the streets and see the reaction.

I hope your next vehicle is not only trouble free, but also one that you really enjoy. Post pictures when you get it.

Thanks GCLimited and Bill...I recalling reading your guys issues and situation. From what I remember on here, there aren't many of us that were left who bought the 2014 right away that haven't had problems or that have moved on from it. With us just selling our home and waiting for the new one to start building, this doesn't help with the anxiety I'm going through. I'm just tried of having to bring it in once a month or every other because something isn't right and they can't seem to fix it.

I don't blame you guys either. I'm very happy with my Jeep, but I haven't had any major issues with it. If I had the transmission trouble you all have experienced or are experiencing, I'd probably feel the same way.

Seems to me that Jeep's problem is consistency. They either create good vehicles like mine, or crap vehicles like GC Limited's and others. They either have major problems that can't be fixed or they have none/few problems that may be minor annoyances. If they could eliminate those lemons from the sold vehicles, people would feel a whole lot better about buying one.

But honestly, if you're not feeling good about your Jeep, selling it and finding something you DO like seems like a smart move. I feel like mine was built for me...I love the luxury/off road combo. I can take clients to and from meetings or go shoot a deer and haul it out on the back of it through the mud and snow. It's at home either way. Perfect...FOR ME, but again, I'd feel differently if it weren't for the fact it's been 15000 miles and only one minor issue. My tranny's great, my engine is great, the electronics are great. If I were you, I'd be selling too.

Good luck and I hope you find a vehicle that "fits" you as well as the GC fits me... AND is reliable!

Re: Thinking of dropping my Jeep

This thread is bringing back all the classic folks; Sno, GC, and Bill. Good to hear from you folks as always. Too bad it's for the wrong reasons.

As for myself. I was pissed when my '14 GC spent "extra" time before being shipped back in Aug 2013, but maybe that quality control process worked for me?

The transmission shifts o.k. ( seemed better before the dealer "updated" it this last winter). The HVAC system, I've never liked on "manual" control. The radio is just fine. Quadra-lift works great ....I didn't order it.

I know when the 3year/36,000 mile mark comes close I will seriously consider a trade-in. I don't want to find out how much a Evic panel, Flash updates, any trip to the dealer would cost.

I suppose the days are gone of doing all the maintenance myself ( like my 01 Cherokee), but that's progress and all ( well, most) of the fine technology makes up for that.

I'll be buying/ adding a Subaru Legacy/ Outback in a couple of months and will certainly compare that experience to the '14 GC

Good luck folks,
Al

Re: Thinking of dropping my Jeep

Sorry to hear about the bad experiences. Its too bad some of these things are causing lots of issues for people as the 2014+ GC's are amazing vehicles. I have a recently purchased new 2014 Summit V8 and LOVE it. I only have a whopping 1300 miles on it, but so far this thing is awesome. I can only hope it stays that way!
Just curious, are these early built vehicles? I know thats no excuse for a vehicle to be plagued with issues, but it will make me feel a bit better if they are lol.

Re: Thinking of dropping my Jeep

Having an April '13 build, I guess I'm an exception for an early adopter. Had some recalls done with no problems, and nothing else but oil changes for over two years now. I did lose the Latitudes as soon as I took delivery, and never had a problem with ride quality or wear. I've never owned a vehicle where I didn't find a few nits to pick, but nothing with my Jeep has become a pressing issue, with the exception of the nav update cluster ***k I'm currently involved with. I can understand why some of the issues people are having can be really annoying to the point of wanting a separation, but I'm not having that problem. I can say that other vehicles I've owned have performed better in some areas, such as climate control or some infotainment glitches. But on the whole, my Jeep is a keeper for me. I just want to add that of all the virtual communities I've belonged to, the Garage is absolutely number 1 in my book.

Re: Thinking of dropping my Jeep

Will be interesting to here if the troublesome ones were early models. I have a 3.6 limited with QT2 and air suspension and have had no trouble at all in 15000 miles one of two updates that were done at the first service. Love my jeep build date was February 2014. European/ South African model RHD.
