I had a 2005 Grand Cherokee Limited with 4.7 L V8 engine.

MSRP: $37,795
Paid: $30,450 in March 2005 (bought new)
Drove it for 6 years and 7 months
October 2011 - Traded in for $14,250 (could have got $14,750 for trade if I had worked the dealers against each other more).
That's not so bad.
Just sad the prices you pay in the USA compared to Canada and you get the same amount when used. I paid $14K more for my '05 Ltd 5.7L in Oct./05 then you did and last fall I was offered $12K for it, which was top price on a trade.

Are you sure about this? I optioned out a 2012 Overland(not summit) with every option and it was over $50k. I ended up getting a 2011 with the same options and 24k miles for $36k and I felt like it was a pretty good deal.

That is MSRP, not what people are actually paying.

What kinda discount did you get on the new car on top of your trade allowance?

In 2005 my sticker was $53K (LTD) and I received a $8K discount, now in 2012 the sticker is $54K (Overland) and then a $3400. fleet discount through work.
