It may interest some to look at the Blackvue application.
As you can see from the pic it shows MPH and you can pull up route traveled on a map.
If you're in Wifi range you can actually watch the live video from your phone.

Re: This is why you should invest in a dashcam

The software works great. Also, the cloud setup is nice. I have the system connect to my home wifi whenever she's in the garage. I can access all my camera content wirelessly. Also, I park close enough my office and have it connect automatically. You can setup the wifi spots in the software/firmware.

I just finished putting cameras in my house. Now this makes me want to put one in my Jeep as well. I wonder when these things will be standard equipment, like backup cameras? That would be far more useful than having engines that shut off every time you stop.

There are some places in the world that folks pretty much always have dash-cams...Russia, for example. They consider it part of their "insurance" plan...

And if for some reason they DO side with this dolt, you probably don't want to support a gym like that in the first place. Win-win ... either way.
Oddly enough, sometimes it's easier to let the good guy bail and avoid a legal hassle from the bad one.

I had an apartment where where it turned out one of the residents was stealing from other residents' storage cages in the basement. I lived in an upstairs end unit and had a few security cameras after being worried about my motorcycle sitting out in the lot. I had good reason, too. A month later, I caught someone stealing the license plate off it.

One day, I caught the guy across the quad from me on video going down into the basement to retrieve a maintenance ladder that he used to climb up and cut the wires on a couple of the cameras. He missed the third one and it clearly showed him removing items from the basement entrance that other residents identified as being their missing items.

The landlord gave all kinds of bluster about giving the guy the boot and even asked about what kind of system I had so he could install one for the complex.

However, after the lukewarm reception I got from the cops in regards to even talking to the guy and nearly having to beg them to take a copy of the video, the whole thing seemed to go away.

I moved out, along with a couple others. He's still there.

It's all for the best, though. I now have a nicer, larger place on a tree-lined street for only a couple hundred and change more a month - with a garage, to boot.

That guy can have the other place.

Pocketnow.com is selling one for $24.99, not sure if it's a good one or not.

I wouldn't mind getting one like that. I'd like something I didn't have to hard wire. Just have it so you can keep it plugged into the 12V. cigarette lighter receptacle when the vehicle is left unattended.

Re: This is why you should invest in a dashcam

Personally, my ultimate dashcam would have a control box/recorder that would hide itself in the dash or center console with only a remote front and rear camera exposed so they wouldn't be any larger than a typical reverse camera. Further, such a system could allow the cameras to be bumper/grill mounted. More advance models could have additional side view camera inputs. My pet peeve with so many dash cams is the recorder is built into the front camera, making it large and easy to see - and easy to steal.

Of course, the real deal would be to have the car simply offer it as an option. You only have to supply a CF card to record onto and, being built in, would make it essentially theft resistant. The recorder slot could even have a locking cover over it to protect it. When at home, your car could connect to your WiFi network so you could download your footage.

^^^^^^^^ This is what you want, have used them for remote surveillance, powered by solar panels and deep cycle batteries for weeks at a time.

Can hook up four cameras, I used night vision cams and hid all the dvrs and batteries under this:

Satellite Rock Cover

Neat stuff!

Re: This is why you should invest in a dashcam

It is a shame that remote recorders have not kept up with demand. The DVR above and most others only record to D1 standard. This is not too good for recording number plate details.

CCTV Resolutions

1080p Resolution - 1920 x 1080
720p Resolution - 1280 x 720
D1 Resolution - 704 x 480

EDIT - looked further and found there are some 1080p mobile DVRs starting to appear.
