I did that once after a hit and run. The police did nothing. A car sideswiped me in a turn, video clearly showed it lane change and clip me. They wrote down the plate and did an "info" report and told me to file a claim. There's a couple of million people in my city and we have the highest per-capita crime in the state. The police don't seem too interested in traffic crime unless there's an injury.

Completely appalling behavior. Why someone would take the time to do something so petty, especially completely unprovoked, is something I'll never understand. What a POS.

Sorry that happened MOF. I have a feeling you just sold a lot of dashcams. Unfortunate that you have to deal with it but at least you're getting a good ROI on yours.

Keep us posted.

I have always been surprised of that also. a lady backed into a friend of mines car door clearly her fault and their were witnesses the lady said she didn't do it got in her car and went home. Police go to her house red paint from friends car on her bumper not to mention witnesses and all the police did was ask her to exchange insurance info with him. It was hit and run they should have thrown the book at her. I have seen other cases like that too almost like they don't want to be bothered with paper work if it's only property damage in a hit and run.

I asked a Law Enforcement friend that same question. He said it's paperwork. Said they don't even write tickets close to shift change because they get in trouble for doing overtime for paperwork. Said small towns will take on every crime but big cities just don't have the manpower to handle 2 million drivers and the havoc they cause.

in my state hit and run if its an attended(meaning someone in the vehicle) and the property damage is over $1000(that's not hard these days most any decent impact is over $1000) with no injuries or injuries it is considered a felony with up to 5 years in jail, $2500 fine and 6 month license suspension. and less than $1000 its a misdemeanor with up to 1 year in jail, $2500 fine and 6 month license suspension.

so that woman that hit my friend did a felony crime as the damage was way over $1000 and the cops just brushed it off like it was nothing and told her to give her insurance info but they will go after people all day long for doing 70mph in a 55 or an expired inspection sticker.

Re: This is why you should invest in a dashcam

The best way to deal with hit and run drivers is through insurance companies. If you catch them dead to rights, they could have their insurance canceled, or be put on high risk. That will cost them a pile of money. Police can't even keep the illegal guns off the street in our small city. They certainly don't have time to chase down fender benders.

To the OP, have you considered a billboard with the perp's picture? Would cost a few bucks, but the satisfaction would be high. Crowd funding might be easy once folks knew the story. I'd surely donate.

If you do do that, definitely wait until there is a conviction or guilty plea - otherwise you could expose yourself to possible civil action. My guess is the prosecutor's office will come down with a penalty, restitution, and some sort of counseling for anger or whatever if he has no other criminal record. Just be sure to let the prosecutor's office know all of your costs so they can make full restitution part of the deal.

Yes, of course, you wouldn't want to defame his character until the legal system sets him up. Then he's fair game.

Sometimes I think I'll never understand people. Hope you get your Jeep back to it's former glory soon.

Re: This is why you should invest in a dashcam

Man, that guy was a jerk. I cringed at the sound of him doing the deed.

Yet another reason to have a dashcam - for when you're moving. The first clip was shortly after the truck ahead had moved over to pass a slower car. The second clip was 10 minutes later on the same day. The date and time aren't correct, though the time between them is. I had accidentally reset the unit when I reformatted a new card and forgot to re-enter the date and time information:
