Thoughts on trading in the '14 Overland for a Yukon Denali?

Love the Jeep, but I think I'm ready for something new. I also figure resale value is probably still quite strong (until the refreshed-redesign gets unveiled). Family qualifies for GM employee pricing, which makes the full size GMs alluring. I think the Escalade is way too ostentatious. Right now I'm seized with this Yukon.

- Is the Denali tacky?
- Is the Yukon too big for Chicago? But I see a ton of full-size Range Rovers, Tahoes and S-Classes, so I'm thinking you get used to it.

Curious to hear fellow WK2 owners' opinions. Thank you.

The Grand Cherokee is entirely too big for Chicago, let alone aircraft-carrier -sized or -based trucks like the Denali. The GC is sized as a Range Rover and it might actually be shorter than an S Klasse. If you live in the city, commute in the city or even visit it regularly, a Jeep is too big, let alone the Yukon.

Obvious progress and refinement enhancements aside, I still see so much similarities between the current gen. Truck offerings from GMC and their products from two decades ago. Not the same can be said about their Euro or OZ rebranded offerings as Cadillac CTS/ATS, Buick Regal etc...which are actually desirable cars.

I too was thinking about trading for a '15 Yukon Denali before I ran across this thread: 2015 YUKON NOISE IN CABIN - 2015 Chevrolet Suburban/Tahoe, GMC Yukon, & Cadillac Escalade - GM-Trucks.com.

In summary, many owners of these '15 vehicles have experienced a booming and pressure sensation while driving their vehicle - some bad enough to cause physical symptoms (dizziness; nausea; etc.). GM has bought back many '15 Yukons, Tahoes, and Escalades because of this. I'd be very cautious before purchasing one of these.

I live in Chicago, granted I live in the NW outskirts of the city and the GC is fine for normal city living. Now closer to downtown or the lake I think just about any car sucks...I hate driving that way so I may be a little bias lol

On a business trip to Dixon IL my job rented me a car for the drive. I had a 2015 Suburban. That thing is huge! I could not see myself driving that thing on a daily basis especially in Chicago. Even by me and I'm literally 3 blocks from the city limits and from the forest preserve.

It was a nice ride though. Maybe try renting one for a weekend and see how it works out.

I own a 2012 JGC Overland with 5.7L. My wife drives a new 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe LTZ and I really like it. Haven't had any of the buffeting sounds mentioned in that thread. It drives awesome, very comfortable, quiet and luxurious. My Jeep with the Hemi might have a little more pep than the Tahoe, but the Yukon Denali comes with the 6.2L 420 HP & 460 ft/lbs of torque which I have to assume will be on par with the JGC 5.7L or better. The Tahoe is bigger yes, but you'll get used to it. If you're trying to parallel park on the streets on downtown Chicago you're probably in for a rude awakening.

I really like my Jeep, it's been a great car and have no complaints, I would recommend them to friends and family. But I would rather drive the Tahoe.

Coming on to the Jeep Garage to ask if you should get a GM Denali? Bold move haha.

Honestly I think it looks sharp - it's something that the JGC is not - a full size SUV, probably even has a frame under there. If you're looking for something bigger, I couldn't fault you for getting that!

As far as potential problems go - every vehicle has them. Take one for an extended test drive and see how you like it/if you encounter any problems. As far as city driving goes - every vehicle sucks... bigger ones just suck more.

I have a 2014 Overland with the 5.7 and my father has a Yukon Denali. I love driving both (wish my exhaust sounded like his). The Yukon is harder to drive because it is wider but you'll get used to it. We have the Yukon because it has the 6.2L to pull a boat with ease. Weigh the pros and cons and then go from there.

That's a great looking Denali.

I almost traded our 13 Overland in for a 14 Hemi as we needed more power for towing. Love the Jeep and it's size so couldn't part with it.

I picked up a lightly used 2010 Denali and made the Jeep my wife's daily driver. The Denali is a beast on the road. With all the features the Denali comes with it's easy to drive and park even though its huge.

You'll get used to it and not regret it.

I love the space and power of it. It fits coolers, luggage, dogs, friends and a boat behind all with ease. Gas mileage will take a hit. These things have serious power and you can feel it.

Actually trading in 1-2 year old cars for new ones can be CHEAPER than keeping one car for 10+ years. You can't just consider the payment, but also maintenance (little to none on a new car), upkeep (tires, oil, fluids, belts all come new on a new car), fuel economy (gets better and better every year), and of course, driver satisfaction. If he can afford it and it's what he wants, then he should do it.

One man's financial freedom is another man's prison.

Want to share with my experience,... My jeep was sent back to collision center to correct the errors.. So, got a rental suv which it is 2015 Chevy Suburban... know its bit different but still. So, after just 1 hour of driving... I definitely can't wait to have my jeep back! I d buy older Tahoe/Yukon.

I haven't driven the new Yukon Denali, although I do have a new Denali pickup as well as a '14 Overland. I got the Overland by trading in my 08 Yukon Denali. I wouldn't be upset with either choice. There are times I wish I was driving my 08 Denali over the Jeep and visa versa. Both are great cars, imo.

OP, I am actually thinking of doing the same thing. Recently learned my family is going to get a little (+1) bigger. I felt the Jeep was tight before, now I'm thinking I definitely need something larger. I actually have an appointment to test drive a '15 Yukon SLT (5.3L) and '15 Yukon Denali (6.2L) this Friday. As long as I don't get screwed on turning my leased 14 Overland in, I am most likely leaning this way. Let us know if you ended up going with the Denali.

I traded in my '11 Summit last week for one of them obnoxious '15i Escalades.
If room is what you are looking for, a GM big body is a pretty good option.
I only have 160 miles on it, so to supply a full report on the vehicle would be premature.
The Jeep was a great vehicle. I had a very late '11 build and had zero issues with it.
I am noticing an improvement in fuel mileage though…I was getting 13.1 mpg with the Hemi, something found pathetic for a vehicle the size of the GC.

Every GM "truck" with over 30k miles on it that I have ever been in is a rattle trap. Was in a friends Denali a while back, went down a bumpy ally and over a set of railroad tracks (route I drive every day)... I could not believe the noise/shake of the interior.
They are awesome off the showroom floor, but degrade quickly.

Rent one for a week or so. It's worth the expense to see how it behaves in your daily life. That's what we did, unintentionally, before we bought the JGC Overland. We had a Limited for 5 days, that stretched into 10 during January '15. We liked the vehicle so much we ended up buying the Overland last month.
