Forum Thoughts people??

What is the point of having the ability to search for threads or posts or even have subcategories if no one uses them? People really need to do a search on things, I has been probably talked about 10 times by the time you think you have the problem. The WK2 section is the worst offender of this and we need to keep things organized people. Hopefully the admins will continue to move more threads or delete duplicates and all these threads/post take up data space on their servers.

If we could be mindful of this and do a little research before posting our question that we have a feeling SOMEONE has already asked, it will help out more people in the long run than you know.

Case in point: someone posts a thread on UConnect and iPhone...Obviously they didn't look anywhere else in the forums to know that there is a UConnect section in the forums. Probably the best place to put it in there as that is where others might look and help answer.

Re: Thoughts people??

I definitely agree, though this problem is common to most, if not all, forums.

As a new member (and soon to be 1st-time jeep owner come Friday!) I have been scouring the forums and using the search function to develop an archive of thread subscriptions that are relevant to my interests (plasti-dip, window tinting, maintenance issues, floor/cargo liners, etc). If more people did this, the forum would be less cluttered and make it that much easier to find what one is looking for.

Re: Thoughts people??

Well, how do you know people don't search? Maybe if the search was removed there would be even more repeated questions

My 2 cents; don't worry about it. Let the people who like to search, search, and the people who can't be bothered, you're free to skip over their question and move on.

My own pet-peeve on forums is a title that does not describe the nature of the post, like "check it out" or "is this normal". That doesn't help me determine whether or not I want to jump into the thread.

If they did search, then there wouldn't be a repeat question of the exact same thread that would have their answer now would there? If the person didn't put what their thread was about correctly, wouldn't it be nice if it was in the correct subsection instead of just in a general area? That's the point, everyone is just posting in the general area on not in the subsections that their question specifically is about. You would think that would make sense.

Re: Thoughts people??

I agree with SnoFire.

But, there is a but ...

I used search and put in 'brake recall' and got these results;

Jeep Garage - Jeep Forum

I went to Google and searched 'JeepGarage: brake recall' and got these results;

https://www.google.com/webhp?sourcei...brake%20recall

I think if the forum search function worked better it might get more use.

Yeah, I'd agree.

Granted, there are many sites where Google search works better than the site search by far--even at some very techie companies.

Wonder what search is used?

The current interface is overly complicated, almost like a web style database query engine for a highly complex series of topics, plus it relies on a fallacy--that folks posting are equally technogeekile and always post topics in a perfect manner in the perfect forum, with a perfect title, etc. etc. etc.

I suspect the Zoom search engine would work better.

Re: Thoughts people??

I'm not saying the search tool is the best or always works like it should, but I bet there are people that just post and don't think about looking because its more convenient for them and want a rapid response while the rest of us just go "Ugh, really another thread on this same topic that there are already 10 threads on."

Yes we have admins and they can/should be monitoring these things but we should kind of help them out so they don't have to try and keep up with this stuff. Most of these admin do it to help the site and don't get paid (volunteer).

Re: Thoughts people??

I have to agree that the search function is probably working better than you think. There might be 40 posts about a topic instead of 10.

As others have pointed out. I think a big problem comes to 'terms.' You might abbreviate a topic, misspellings (break and brake), etc.

But then again is this 'Thread" really required since all double posting threads usually start out with "Did you use the search function?"

Everyone has opinions.

Re: Thoughts people??

I agree people should browse the threads and use the search feature but

it is unreliable or non functional.

I have used it to search threads that I knew the exact title of and it still couldn't provide me with the result I wanted and I was doing a specific search for a thread that I either started or posted in several times.

Other times it is very funny how someone will start a whole new thread on a topic that already had a thead on the same subject two spaces down in the list.

Maybe to help with the thread title searches we should establish a thread title format.
