Re: Tint + Sunshade = Bad???

I emailed my question to Llumar and to my surprise (I figured they wouldn't want to respond and create a possible liability) and delight, they replied with the following:

We believe this would be safe, though you are not likely to need the sunshade given the close to 0% UV transmission and little IR, but the shade would be helpful to reduce surface temperature of the dash by an addition 20 degrees or so. We have not received any claims of thermal stress cracks of windscreens with this product under any circumstances that I am aware of in the many years of its use around the world.

So this film doesn't actually darken the windshield, right?

Re: Tint + Sunshade = Bad???

From what I have read it will block 22% of light as it is rated at 78% VLT, so yes it will block some of the light. In Oz you are not allowed to put any film on the front screen.

The specs quoted by Enforcer are correct. Practically speaking, it is a very subtle effect. I didn't tell my wife I had the windshield tinted and I asked her to tell me what she noticed different about it when I got it home...nothing.

As I mentioned above, there is a very slight blue tint, but I really don't notice it unless I'm thinking about it. I can tell when looking from inside out, that things aren't quite as vivid/bright, but not by much. The dash and steering wheel are very noticeably cooler. Since the film cuts out 99.9 percent UV and a good chunk of the heat (IR), I'm certain the leather dash will stay new looking longer.

Biggest effect I've seen is while wearing polarized glasses. I've seen purple roads, and purple sky, but no purple rain!!! I will be wearing non-polarized glasses while driving this car from now on. Anybody want to swap a good pair of non-polarized Serengeti Drivers for my Maui Jims???
