Tire rant

I'm so annoyed... I've had my eye on a set of Duratracs for a while and now that the GC is here, I tried to arrange ordering them but everyone is out. Apparently there is a nationwide backorder until mid January for them. There are two sets in my area and both are on layaway (what kind of ghetto sh-... ).

Rant over. There are some on ebay that are highly marked up but I'm considering alternatives. I really wanted the Duratracs though. :(

I was considering the Duratracs, KO2s, and the new Nitto Exo Grappler. The KO2 and Nitto only come in LT, so there's no warranty for either tire. The DT congress with a 50k warranty in the P sizes.

Neither one also comes in a 255/70R18, which matches the diameter for a 275/65R18, and will fit in the spare wheel well. Of course, you can also get the spare as a different tire. Not like you'll run a steely in the regular tire rotation anyway.

Also, as 1stJeepGC previously pointed out to me, the DT and Nitto are studdable. The KO2s are not. Doesn't matter to me as I'm not going to run separate winter and summer tires anyway, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I haven't done anything yet, but leaning towards the DTs. Nittos are only in a few shops around STL, and the KO2 hasn't been out very long. The DTs have been well received for awhile now. Plus I can get the same tire on the spare.

I had to wait for my Nitto NT421Qs, too...part of this is because of the sizing that the JGC takes with the 20" wheels.

Not for nothing, but the Bridgestone duelhers I have on mine have been rock solid in any/every weather event so fat

Not trying to hijack your thread, but I think the Kelly Safari TSR is a direct competitor with the GY Duratrac. I know you are looking for something to fit your 20's but this is just an FYI for those of us out there with 17's and 18's.
TreadDepot.com: Kelly Safari TSR Tires
I put a set on my XJ six years ago. Sold it to a buddy and the tread is only at 50% after all that time of daily driving. BTW, Kelly is owned by GY

Kelly is actually a subsidiary of Goodyear. That tells me it's highly unlikely they are competing with Duratracs at a lower price. You are probably sacrificing something along the way. That's not to say it isn't a decent tire and they are US made at least.

The real test of a tire for me is how well it handles rain when half worn. My Goodyears started to feel a little squirrely in the wet with 7/32nds left so I replaced with Michelin LT2s. Am a bit more picky since I regularly tow a 3500 lb travel trailer.

BTW Michelin (high line). BFG (mid line) and Uniroyal (low line) are all the same company. Fact is that there are a lot more tire companies than plants (first two alphanumerics after the DOT on the sidewall is the plant that made them).

Should always look at the DOT label since the last four (maybe only on one side) tell you when they were made.

I personally prefer tires made in this country or Canada

You know, I've been wondering if that was the case.

Wet weather performance is one of my major priorities.

While I've heard pretty much only good things about the Duratrac, it keeps nagging me why they aren't using dual compound like Bridgestone Revo AT2.

How many miles did you have on the Duratracs before they started getting squirrelly?

Thanks,

-john
