To Buy or Not to Buy?

So it is getting time for me to buy a new car and I've been doing some research and seem to be drawn to the JGC Summit. Really liking the white or maybe that Auburn color.

I currently drive a 2005 VW Touareg (V8) with 135k miles. While I love the car, it has been a money pit since being out of warranty. Since it is basically a debadged Cayenne, every little thing on the car cost an arm and leg to fix (as in THOUSANDS) and it seems like every other month something else is going wrong. I'm done at this point.

I want another mid sized SUV. Looking at the Summit it appears to be the best value in terms of options / luxury for the price. At the other end of the spectrum, I am also considering a 4runner TRD Pro or Limited mainly as I want a car that is reliable, but I know it isn't nearly as plush as the JGC. I am done with the Germans. Making this even more difficult is the last American made car I owned was an early 90's Thunderbird and if you look up POS, there will be a picture of that car. Up until this point, I've never considered buying an American car as they remind me too much of bad rentals from Hertz.

I then start seeing these JGC all over the place here in Chicago and they look really good. Car seems to have the off road cred and all the bells and whistles of the BMWs, etc but $20k or more less.

The only thing that scares me right now is reading all these posts about transmission problems. I want a Summit v8, not the v6. My Touareg shifts really bad at low speed / throttle lag. VW pretty much played stupid with owners complaining about it.

Are my fears justified? Besides transmission, any other major issues with the JGC?

Re: To Buy or Not to Buy?

The new Summit V8 models are pretty solid vehicles. I have a late built 2014 Summit that I just bought new a couple months ago and love it! It has 2200 miles on it now and couldn't happier. Hey I'm in the Chicago area and would consider selling it for that new High Altitude model that was just announced. It's new and perfect in every way and the tranny is amazing! Bright white with Grand Canyon brown interior.
I think you would be very happy with a new Grand Cherokee, get one!

Re: To Buy or Not to Buy?

Most of the people having issues were in early 14' builds. I had mine built late 2014 (May 2014), and it's been absolutely fantastic. I really love the design of the vehicle but was also hesitant because of the things I read.

I would feel confident ordering another one.

Re: To Buy or Not to Buy?

Since you want a V8, you shouldn't have many worries about the transmission. The V6 transmissions built by Chrysler instead of the V8 ones built by ZF were the problematic ones.

Re: To Buy or Not to Buy?

I had an early build '14 Overland. I kept it for a year and a half and after a number of successful visits to my local dealer still had three recalls ahead of me. At that point I traded it for an Escape Titanium which has been mostly trouble free.

I still intend to stick to my original plan to order a '16 Summit V8. I have stayed abreast of things through this forum and have no qualms ordering another Grand Cherokee with a Hemi.

If you are planing on the 2014+ 5.7 summit i would not worry about the trans very few trans issues reported on here on the 5.7 trans. Most trans issue reports have been on the v6. I have an early build 2014 5.7 summit (march 2013) and currently have zero issues. I went back several times over the first year with mostly minor issues most were solved with software updates, in addition to 3 or 4 recalls. now over two years later very happy with the 5.7 summit and would highly recommend especialy the current models that have ironed out most bugs and software issues. Only negatives i would really mention are the crappy fortera tires they put on it stock (got rid of those in less than 10k miles) and the navigation system is flakey concerning the routing logic.

Re: To Buy or Not to Buy?

I had an early 14 Summit V6 that had the trans issues. I knew when I started the car it was going to be a rough ride as you would hear a clunk from the rear. Within a month or so of buying the car there was an update that cured the problem. Kept the car for two years with no further trans problems.

I have since traded for a 15 Summit V8 and have no issues at all.

Re: To Buy or Not to Buy?

It sounds you keep your vehicles for a long time. If this is the case I would go for any 2015 Grand Cherokee, (you pick the flavor and options), with the HEMI V-8 and the ZF 8-Speed Transmission. I would also get the Chrysler Max Care Lifetime Warranty. For my 2015 Hemi Limited it ran $2,315.00. You'll be good to go with years of worry free driving.

Re: To Buy or Not to Buy?

I would highly suggest the JGC and the V8 as you are considering. The V6 was the worrisome transmission for the most part but with the late 14's and now 15's the problems have substantially reduced. I'm only speaking for the V6 since I have a 14 Altitude with that engine. However, I would suggest taking both for a spin, the 6 is nice if you don't need the extra power or tow.

Just an FYI. The current model JGC was designed during the Daimler/Chrysler era, hence German. Hope that doesn't deter you since I am certain you will enjoy it over a Toyota any day.

Re: To Buy or Not to Buy?

Buy a summit or Overland, get the lifetime maxcare, buy a FSM and do the maintenance and fluid changes yourself.

It isnt rocket science getting a car to 250k miles. Just change the fluids and wear parts like belts, hoses, brakes, filters and pcv.

buy the maxcare for the electronics.

German cars are wallet flushes, everyone I know who owns one refuses to do their own maintenance and then whines about the ridiculous cost to maintain them!

Re: To Buy or Not to Buy?

I've been driving a 14 V8 GC that's never gave me an issue for 40k miles.
