Re: Torn between the Jeep Grand Cherokee and a.....

Interesting thread.

I sat in about everything.

Ford: New Explorer (size 12D boots don't fit in foot well, worse than BMW I was driving), SportTrac (considered but on the long side, was no longer going to be made), Expedition (drove like a boat, not as much room for the driver as you would consider), F150 (love the comfort, would have bought but they no longer make the supercab short bed, all options are 4" to long to fit in my garage, Raptor would fit length wise but is too tall)

Nissan: Xterra (can't see out left window without ducking), Murano (no leg room/headroom).

Honda: Truck, Pilot, CRV, (knees in the dash and cramped legs).

Chevy/GMC: Equinox (can't sit in back seat, roofline to low), Arcadia (no leg room), Tahoe (liked but $5K more, larger than needed)

Toyota: Tacoma (had to duck to see out front windshield), 4Runner, Highlander, Sequoa (Head rubbed on headliner in drivers seat), FJ Crusier (Terrible visibility, don't know how anyone drives).

Subaru: Forester (could have more leg room), Others: Station wagon, not my style.

Jeep: Really liked how I fit in drivers seat and visibility. Was worried about reliability but took the chance as I just don't fit in anything else comfortably and the Chevy has similar potential reliability risk. If they can prove good reliability and dealers start providing good service, Chrysler will be a super competitor.

Luxury models: Out of what I was willing to spend.

Re: Torn between the Jeep Grand Cherokee and a.....

We were looking for an SUV or crossover - something smaller than the three row full size we had, but with more luxury.

She liked the Cadillac SRX, until we test drove one and were both very underwhelmed by the quality of the materials. Just seemed to be very expensive for what you were getting. Dynamics were okay, but the turbo motor was not impressive (as I had hoped).

She looked at the Ford Edge, as it is a twin of Lincoln MKX, but it was not luxurious enough.
The MKX was very nice - fantastic interior - loved the Sync/Nav system, but the driving dynamics were poor (lots of noise, numb steering, etc.)

The Jeep Overland was very impressive as far as the vehicle and dynamics (she kept coming back the quietness of the Overland), but the interior was not what she wanted. We were very very close to pulling the trigger on an MKX until I stumbled across this picture:

I convinced her to hold off long enough to see it in person, it was all over - the Summit had both the luxury, presence, and dynamics that we were looking for!

Re: Torn between the Jeep Grand Cherokee and a.....

For my wife and I we really were not in a new vehicle market but a few things started happening to the '60 GC Limited we have now so I told her she could get a new one. Well she then was torn cause she wanted me to get the new vehicle this time around (she always gets the new vehicle) so she was asking me what I wanted. Well fo rme I would like a 75-84 CJ5 and keep my '01 Mustang. She wants the stang gone and wanted to get me a new F150 or such but I said nope! Then she teased me with the new BOSS 302 coming out and said I could have it! I siad ok but no to two payments so we are going to get the Jeep GC for her. Funny how things work out huh!

I did, pretty closely. The LR4 drove a bit heavier, but had a great engine/transmission combo, it felt quicker than the GC, but slightly lower mileage. Interior was very nice, if a bit chunkier, and it had a slightly roomier cabin and cargo area. One big hurdle was the price, even 1yr old was more than a new overland, and new was solidly into the mid to high 50k range for similar equipment. Also dealer support, I have a good one local to me, but on road trips it is going to be easier to find a Jeep or Dodge dealer for sure.

Still a great vehicle, if you have dealers nearby, and can handle the price. The LR4 is a great buy compared to the RRs.

I looked for a new suv for the last 2 years. I currently have a Liberty but although i always loved it, it was now time for me to get more luxury.

What i looked at:
Audi q5: Really loved the look but since i don't have an Audi dealer in less than 40 miles... Rejected!

Bmw x3 (2011): if it was not of the closest dealer distance, probably would have bought it. I must admit than i've always been worried about bmw reliability and maintenance price on the long term. Rejected!

Ford edge 2011 limited: not luxury enough, average interior, cheap plastics, average
Leather seats. Rejected!

Lincold mkx: cool interior but the exterior and the brand image, look old man's car to me. Rejected!

I went to the last montreal auto show and seated in all these cars, one after the others. To me, nothing compared to the sheer interior luxury of the jgc overland. Also, none of the other offerings has that unique x5-like bad ass look. I was sold on the spot. I must admit that i have been quite preoccupied by the engine offerings. Not satisfied by the v6 and worried about v8 mileage. I really think New Fords have the most efficient engines but i could not turn my look away from the jgc. Luxury, style and equipment is what convinced me to jump and ignore my ecologic footprint considerations... Hope i won't regret it!
