No front hook but used the rear hook to recover an earlier model
Mitsubishi Outlander AWD (low ground clearance). Some English tourists hired one to take to Fraser Island. I was surprised how far they got along the sand track to the ferry at Inskip Point. The sand was very deep and soft. He had quite some speed but it did not help when he got to the soft stuff. He tried to continue before I stopped him from burying the car.

He was most disappointed when I advised him that the car would not make it to his hotel on Fraser Island. I think he under-estimated the "sand track" to get to the hotel.

Fraser Island, off Australia’s eastern Queensland coast, is the world's largest sand island, stretching over 120km.

For someone who just uses their vehicle on pavement, this would be the best use I could see for them. Some of these tow truck drivers aren't too smart in regards to what they hook on to. Tow hooks kind of leap out at them, and they won't start looking around under your vehicle.

There is a hook in the rear?

Couldn't you just slip one into the receiver?

On models that don't have factory tow, yes...there's a rear recovery point. It gets removed when the OEM hitch receiver is bolted into the bumper.

Re: Tow hooks, ever use them?

Australian models have the front hooks removed for pedestrian safety. There is a part located in the spare wheel well that can be added into the front for towing purposes but it is NOT recommended for recovery. The rear one is a recovery hook. Yes, it is removed when a tow package is installed.

I'm curious. How does not having tow hooks make pedestrians "safer"?

I believe there is also softer padding behind the bumper. The metal tow hooks could potentially break bones or tear flesh. ???

Or maybe the reduced weight may provide better braking distance.

Agree.

Used mine in the recent "1 to 3 inches" [they missed a !!@#$!! decimal point] to pull a Subie out of trouble. Luckily the Subie had a tow strap.

Would it be too much topic drift to ask who makes really good tow straps that aren't going to behead me?

As I understand it, you want one that folds over and is sewn on the ends to secure the towing hook on the strap.

Leery of cheap import crap, as the ditches 'round here mean I will be looking for something in the 30 foot range or possibly 50.

Excellent question. Do Ozzies regularly run over pedestrians? :-)

Ok, just to clarify, is this tow hook under my 2015 GC suitable as a recovery point for a snap-strap?ImageUploadedByJeepGarage1455148139.653147.jpg

Re: Tow hooks, ever use them?

As a tow point with a "tow strap" it's good to go. Snap straps. . . Depends on the "jerk" at either end. I think the owner's manual does not recommend their use.
