Tow package question

I had the dealer install the tow package in December when I picked up my Laredo X (Silver, Commandview, 6 cylinder) but they didn't install the electronics. So tomorrow when I get the LED fixed in the doors and the throttle lag update, I am having them finish the job. Here's my dilemma: 4 prong, 7 prong, (is even that right?)? I only need the tow package for a bike rack. But who knows? Since I have no idea what is at stake, could I have some advice?

Re: Tow package question

My tow package came with two spring loaded doors, one for 4 pin, one for 7 pin.

I've towed a lot of boats and never used 7 pin. Our trailer brakes around here are surge brakes only requiring a 4 pin hookup.

Re: Tow package question

The tow package harness has both 4-pin and 7-pin connectors. As CrazyJ said, they have their own lil spring loaded door to the left of the trailer hitch.

Re: Tow package question

wynnrs, what other tow duties might you see in the future, and what is your WK2 - Hemi or V6?

As CJ states, you can tow up to 4k+ lbs with the surge brakes on a 4 pin only, the 7 pin will allow larger trailer loads and provide for trailer brakes wired via a brake controller.

You'll have neither pin hookup needed for the bike rack but nice to at least have the 4 pin for future duty.

Re: Tow package question

If only the rest of my life's questions were responded to so quickly and so well.
I've got a v6, and anticipate using a UHaul type trailer from time to time.

Re: Tow package question

The tow package should have come with a complete wiring harness that will provide the 4/7 pin rear connectors. The factory kit will provide a correct and seamless connection to the vehicle's electronics and should be used in lieu of the aftermarket brake light taps and other hacks that so many seem to be willing to accept. Don't fall into the trap of "I won't ever tow anything" because you never know. In addition, having been the recipient of a vehicle that claimed to have the factory tow package only to find it was a u-haul kit installed by Bubba at the local fillin' station you need to make sure whatever they do won't negatively effect your resale OR cause future electrical problems.

These aren't rudimentary pickup trucks from the 70's where all you do is bolt on the receiver and splice into the brake lights. The electronics on these new vehicles are fully integrated and since Jeep provides the full wiring harness as an orderable aftermarket package make sure that's what they use and it's installed correctly.

Re: Tow package question

I definitely agree about not using wiretaps and custom wiring.

I was blowing turn signal fuses on my 93 4runner until I figured I'd disconnect the trailer wiring. Guess what? It disappeared.

Later I found the wire that had chafed against a steel edge of a body panel that was causing the short.

Re: Tow package question

Thanks again, just got back from the dealer and they will be putting in the 4/7 pin connector. Now, about the LED lights in the front storage bins, they seemed clueless but we shall see.

Re: Tow package question

So the tow package looks standard and sweet and they performed the reprograms I asked for, drives much better, no lag. But they had no idea what to do about the LED lights in the storage bins. Also, they replaced the rear shock absorber which I did not know was problematic. I have quad 1 and tomorrow, I'm taking my ride on the beach, will air down and check out some sand. I promise not to get stuck. We shall see. My next question, I suspect, will be about what to do if I screw up the tire pressure sensors.
