Tow Rating shows 3500# with class IV package?

I am looking at THIS VEHICLE

My one last uncertainty is that on that dealer web site the “Detailed Specifications” under “Specs and Dimensions” says “Towing Capacity: 1488kg (3,500lbs)” My understanding is that with the Trailer Tow Group IV with the 5.7L engine has a 7200# tow rating. I am trying to get from the dealer in writing that this vehicle has a higher tow rating as equipped.

HERE is the Jeep Towing Capabilities Chart. It shows for the JGC Limited

5.7L V8 engine with fuel saver technology and VVT
360 hp
390 lb-ft of torque
Eight-speed automatic transmission

Class IV – Extra Heavy Duty

Trailer Tow Group
(Available )
LIMITED
Max towing: 7,400 pounds, 2WD
Max towing: 7,200 pounds, 4WD
Max payload:1,170 pounds, 2WD
Max payload:1,290 pounds, 4WD

Is this enough guarantee on tow capacity? Or is it possible that the 3500 pounds in the spec sheet is correct? Need to get this right for sure! Seems like every dealer web site shows the same thing. None show a 7200# rating when equipped with the Class IV towing package.

Re: Tow Rating shows 3500# with class IV package?

If the window sticker has the Tow-IV package listed then you are fine. When I bought mine, I almost fell into the trap where dealers were putting the factory hitch on standard vehicles. Some called it "Tow-IV trailer hitch" or some such thing. One went so far as to claim they would install the "Tow-IV Package" for me at no additional charge if I bought it that day. Fortunately I was informed enough to know that it was so much more than a receiver hitch.
Anyway, look at the factory sticker. They may have their website wrong.

Two capacity for 5.7 is 7500 for 2wd and 7200 for 4wd. I had a 2005 Hemi and towed my 6000 lb bought. Now have 2015 Eco diesel and will tow same boat. Dealers never have their shit together.

It's only 7400/ 7200 when the appropriate options are added (Tow package, includes HD cooling, HD brakes, larger alternator). Otherwise it is about 5000.

Re: Tow Rating shows 3500# with class IV package?

The dealer web page is wrong, it doesn't take into account the tow package. Those pages are usually boilerplate.

Trailer Tow IV is on the sticker, so you should be at the higher rating.

Re: Tow Rating shows 3500# with class IV package?

I am guessing they used the metric number of 3500kg. The build sheet for this actual vehicle (1C4RJFBT9GC389079) does show a factory fitted class IV hitch:

Re: Tow Rating shows 3500# with class IV package?

For people who don't tow up and down hills, you'll be fine installing the $200 OEM hitch yourself (or have dealer do it). Its rated at 5,000 instead of 7,500 from factory, but in actuality, you have no issues towing 7,000 on flat land (like Florida or Nebraska) for trips less than 200 miles. In those situations, you don't need the transmission cooler, or the leveling. They have to make it work with more load than advertised. However, if you KNOW you will be towing 7000 often or in hilly terrain, then spend extra $500 and pick a JGC with a factory installed hitch.

Re: Tow Rating shows 3500# with class IV package?

Thanks for the good help on this thread. Got the Limited with Class IV factory tow package. Satisfied that it has 7200 rating.

??? Re Brake Controller:
- Looking at the Tekonsha 90195 P3 Electronic Brake Control. Any comments?
- Does the dealer have to flash the software to enable a controller?
- Surprised there is no factory option for add on for an integrated controller.

Re: Tow Rating shows 3500# with class IV package?

Tekonsha P3 is what I use. Great controller. And no, there's nothing for your dealer to do...your wiring is already active if you have factory towing at manufacture. You may want to get the pre-terminated Tekonshia cable which makes installation totally "plug and play". eTrailer has them for JGC.

BTW my Prodigy controller is installed on the passenger side of the steering column so I can see the display through the lower spokes.

Re: Tow Rating shows 3500# with class IV package?

Keep in mind that the advertised tow rating is for a vehicle with few options other than the hemi and tow package. Anything that is added (air suspension, roof racks, etc) will reduce your payload capacity and available towing weight.
