Re: Towed my travel trailer home today...

I wonder if a trailer of that weight couldn't be towed in Drive to save gas?

I kind of wondered that, too. I think next time out to the track I'll put the EVIC on trans temp and give it a try for a bit.

I'm not sure I know what that means. OK, I haven't a clue what that means. I haven't had a chance to experiment with the EVIC very much at all so I haven't seen that screen yet.

Re: Towed my travel trailer home today...

Cycle through your EVIC under vehicle info and it has a sub-menu for transmission temperature.

So, if you set the EVIC at trans temp, will the transmission shift any differently? For example drop out of overdrive when the going gets tough?

NO. I believe the suggestion was to monitor the transmission temperature while towing to verify that it is operating in the normal range.

OK, thanx guys. I'll experiment as I go along.

Yes, this is correct. The debate I'm having in my head is that my trailer is light enough that leaving it in fourth gear on the highway seems like overkill, but heavy enough that I'm worried about just putting it in drive. So in the EVIC, one of the read outs is transmission temp. So next time I'm hooked up, I think I'll experiment and monitor the trans temp carefully. If the trans temp starts going up, that's a sign that it's likely working too hard (due to shifting in and out of overdrive too much) and it will tell me that I need to leave it in fourth. But if the trans temp remains close to normal - then I should be OK to just tow in drive.

Re: Towed my travel trailer home today...

Short answer: Its not shifting in and out of o/d that drives the temp out but locking/unlocking.

Complete answer: Haven't determined the exact value yet (should be in service manual </rant>) but over about 50% PLA (throttle possition) it will probably unlock and go into PE (Power Enrichment - can see in O2 reading).

What happens is that unlocked, the torque converter starts slipping and that generates heat so is better in 4th/locked than OD/unlocked.

By itself, 4th vs OD should not affect the MPG that much, but if spending a lot of time in PE, that will.

Back in the day, when towing you could feel the difference between primaries and secondaries in your foot. Now you need instrumentation.
