towing advice

hi. have never towed anything with my 4x2 v6 '15 jgc. i put a 3rd party hitch on it (rock solid) and wiring harness works.

thinking of towing a u-haul tailer about 150mi. with king bed (mattress, box springs, frame, headboard), a dining table and chairs, some boxes of stuff. does this sound doable?

i'm worried about damaging my baby.

Re: towing advice

Your max tow capacity with an after-market hitch receiver install (even if Mopar OEM) is 3500 lbs. Other than that, should be no issues. Note you need the electrical live (4-pin) for lighting to work and be legal.

Re: towing advice

thank jim. my hitches wiring harness has 4 and 7 and whatever so all good there.

not doubting you, but why do you say max tow is 3500 if hitch mfr says 5000?

Re: towing advice

The hitch receiver is capable of a greater load, but your Jeep is not unless you have Factory Tow.

BTW, if your wiring uses the factory installed harness to the front, a Jeep dealer needs to turn it on in the computer system or it will not work.

Re: towing advice

I installed a Mopar hitch a Jeep dealership but after initial vehicle purchase. I towed a 16 foot trailer with an entire one bedroom apartment from Orlando to Dallas without a single issue.

The ride was actually extremely smooth. Smooth to the point where I would forget I was towing this giant trailer while on the highway. Obviously getting up to speed and braking are going to differ, but your vehicle will be just fine.

This was done with a 2014 JGC Limited 4x2 V6. The entire trip took 18 hours. I promise you, your baby will be just fine.

As I mentioned it's already working and yes I had dealer make the change. Thanks!

Thanks! Is a dealer installed Mopar hitch the same result as a factory hitch?

I'm on my way right now to Orlando by the way . Lived in Dallas a long time ago too. Small world.

It's the same hitch, but there are other factors in play besides the hitch.

A dealer hitch will still have reduced capacity compared to a factory hitch.

Re: towing advice

I'm not familiar with what equipment yours came with since it didn't have the tow package. An important consideration is transmission temperature. If it didn't come with a transmission cooler installed, you will need to be extra careful. Do some reading on the impact of heat and then watch your transmission temperature reading.

Re: towing advice

err my '12 is similar but does have the factory towing package and *nothing* is different about the chassis or drivetrain or cooling system. Only difference is receiver, wiring (7 pin Bargman but no brake controller, I have added a Prodigy P2), and full sized spare. Didn't even get the load levellers.

Highest trans temp I've seen was 174F (normally about 165f) with 203F coolant on a 90+F day.

Does tow my 4k camper easily and see no rise in any temperatures. Suspect the 3500 limit may be because few aftermarket have a Bargman. Or just lawyers.
