Towing capacity

Can anyone please explain how the 2011 GC 3.6 Pentastar is rated at 5000lbs but the new Durango on the same platform and with the same motor is rated to tow 6200lbs?

Tow ratings are a combined factor of:
- Engine HP/TQ
- Rear Axle Ratio
- Rear Axle load capacity
- Trans Ratios
- Trans TQ capacity
- Eng/Trans Cooling System
- Suspension capacity
- Braking system capacity
- Vehicle's actual Curb Weight, its GVWR and its CGVWR

It is far more than comparing engines and transmissions. In fact, if the V6 powered Grand Cherokee weighed less than it did, it would reduce the tow weight rating. For example, you would never want to tow 5000 lbs with a vehicle that weighs 3200 lbs even if teh 3200 lb vehicle had 500hp and 500 ft/lbs of tq...it would be too much a weight discrepancy. That is just one reason the Grand Cherokee weighs as much as it does (for crash&rollover protection and for higher tow ratings).

That doesn't quite answer your question but is a place to start when making comparisons.
