Guitar, you are GTG with that load. You may get some more wind loads than my rig pictured below, but she's somewhere over 6k lbs and we get up and over Berthoud Pass more than a half dozen times a year, no brake controller (hydraulic surge) no sweat. We'll even take the left lane once in awhile on I-70, you know how the looky loos are here.
I have yet to feel the need for a weight distributing hitch, but you might be well served to add one if you haven't yet tried it.
