Smile Towing Questions

I'm shopping for a trailer and I could use some advice on how heavy of a trailer I can buy to tow with my 2014 grand jeep cherokee limited, 5.7L, V8 Hemi. The towing capacity of this 4x4 Jeep is listed at 7200 lbs.

Say I buy a 4400 lb (dry weight) trailer and load it with about 1000 lbs of water, propane and gear. The loaded trailer would be about 5400 lbs.

The Jeeps curb weight (empty) is 5134 lbs. So now add about 350 lbs for 2 adults + maybe 200 lbs of gear and maybe 150 lbs for a hitch and such bringing its total weight to about 5834 lbs.

The loaded trailer at about 5400 lbs is well below the 7200 lb towing capacity.

The combined weight of jeep, trailer and all contents is about 11,230 lbs

Can this Jeep handle this without damage? And is 7200 lbs towing capacity figured on level ground only, or also for going up hills?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Towing Questions

You should be fine, but you should also be using a weight distribution hitch with your trailer to insure proper balance for safer towing. Your intended trailer is isn't weighing much different than the small horse trailer I tow. (and towing a live load is very different from a travel trailer) You have plenty of power available. Make sure you get a quality brake controller (required), such as a Tekonshia P3 or similar.

Very good advice.
I would add that you should make sure to follow the instructions for the load equalizer hitch. I've seen so many of them improperly adjusted and that is just a waste of money. Getting the load 'equalized' is not a simple task and takes some 'grunt'. When you are finished, your vehicle and trailer should be completely level.
